UWA President Todd G. Fritch says the University of West Alabama's recognition as the Best College for Rural America "validates something we know to be true about UWA: our location in rural West Alabama does not limit our impact—it helps define our purpose."

"Regional universities are essential to the future of rural America,” Fritch said. “We educate teachers, healthcare professionals, engineers, public servants, and other professionals our communities need. We create pathways to careers and economic mobility, and we provide the talent that allows our communities and industries to grow. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and American Council on Education featured The University of West Alabama (UWA) in their national Opportunity Colleges and Universities ( ) series, highlighting institutions like ours that expand access and create clear pathways to lasting economic opportunity.

This profile shows how UWA has successfully catered to the specific needs of Alabama’s Black Belt, one of the country’s most economically isolated regions. From holding tuition flat for nine consecutive years to expanding flexible online pathways and developing workforce programs in fields like forestry technology and nursing, UWA is helping students develop employable skills, while strengthening the region we call home.

The University of West Alabama community and public are invited to attend William Bartram and Alabama: A Traveling Exhibit, exploring the life, travels and discoveries of one of America's most influential early naturalist-artists.

The exhibit will officially open with a reception on Thursday, Sept. 3, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Julia Tutwiler Library.
