The new building also houses a 3D printing lab and robotic lab, while greatly increasing hands-on space for welding, manufacturing, plastics technology and material science. Courses in Engineering, Quality Management and Occupational Safety & Health also will be offered at the MEC. Schoolcraft College faculty members combine academic excellence with a wealth of hands-on, real-world experience as well as key business connections. This is especially true in the occupational programs, where instructors often are able to line up students with jobs while they are finishing their coursework.

The Scouts of America were geared up at the MEC today to earn their Welding Badge, marking an exciting hands-on experience for them. This collaboration offers a unique opportunity for young Scouts to explore the world of welding, an essential trade skill that is both practical and creative. Under the guidance of skilled instructors, Scouts participated in a series of workshops designed to teach them the fundamentals of welding—focusing on safety, techniques, and tools.

The day began with an introduction to welding safety and equipment, emphasizing the importance of personal protective gear like gloves, goggles, and aprons. Scouts learned how to handle a welding torch and the basics of MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding, a commonly used method. From there, they dove into more hands-on activities, like welding small projects, starting with simple metal pieces and gradually worked their way up to more intricate designs.

As part of the badge requirements, they documented their learning process and reflected on their experience, making sure they understand both the technical and creative aspects of welding.

At the end of the day, each Scout will not have only earned their welding badge but will also have a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship and precision involved in welding, while appreciating its applications in a variety of industries . This experience has not only help build their skills but also foster teamwork, safety awareness, and a sense of accomplishment.

Excited to share that Schoolcraft's 1st Student Resource Fair was a major success! Dept. reps and local employers were at the MEC to welcome about 75 students and talk about College resources, career pathways, and employment opportunities. Students were fortunate to meet with Gil-Mar Manufacturing and AlphaUSA, two employers that we have had the privilege of partnering with for many years.
Mega kudos to Project Coordinator Cara Pitone Lawton who created and organized the event.
Hearty thanks to Bernie and Deb from AlphaUSA, and Mark, Stan and Steve from Gil-Mar for continued support of our students.
And appreciation to Travis Michalak - Learning Support Svcs., Anthony Kaltner - Advising, Adrienne Downer - Student Svcs., and Karen Maxton, and Jessica Krueger-Koupal - Workforce Development, for being integral to our students' success!

The Wayne RESA Backpack to Briefcase career event is back!

Middle and High school students came to discuss possible future career paths, including Welding, Mechatronics, Material Science, Manufacturing, Computer-Aided Design as well as many of our other programs. Through discussions and questions with representatives from various professional backgrounds, they gained insight into what our MEC programs could entail for their future and learned about the many programs and advantages that Schoolcraft College offers.
