CU Lock Haven Biology students recently traveled to the 46th Mid-Atlantic States Mycological Conference hosted by North Carolina A&T. Students shared their research continuing a strong tradition of undergraduate research.

Students also participated in hands-on mushroom cultivation workshops, including shiitake log inoculation and applied fungal biology training. That's so fungi!!

Congratulations to students Kara Grosso (M.S.), Liz Culp, Jared Black, and Emily Winton on representing Dr. Overton's lab at Commonwealth University–Lock Haven! 👏🔬🍄

So many Biology and Biomedical Science majors and our Biology Masters students (Ryan Miller, Natalie Brown, Sam Fike, Kara Grosso) showcased their outstanding research at the Celebration of Scholarship last week at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania – Lock Haven Campus!

Our students transformed months of hard work into professional presentations, sharing their science with faculty, alumni, and the broader community during this fantastic event. Many of these students had these capstone projects part of the Biology course "Introduction to Biological Research". We are incredibly proud of the passion, confidence, and scientific communication skills they demonstrated throughout the day.

A special thank you to all of the alumni who returned to campus to support and celebrate our amazing students and the exciting research happening here at CU-Lock Haven.

Missed it this year? Don’t worry — the Celebration of Scholarship will be back again next year in April! Come to the Haven to see the great work we are doing! 🔬🧬👏 Commonwealth University-Lock Haven Commonwealth University College of Health, Science, and Technology Commonwealth University Graduate Admissions Clinton County Economic Partnership

Wait… a student research project could impact the Susquehanna River?!

From invasive species to water quality, this is bigger than a classroom experiment.

This is science with real-world consequences.

Rocks. Mussels. A $400K river comeback.

It might sound unexpected—but it’s exactly what’s happening at Lock Haven. One student’s research is helping restore miles of the Susquehanna River and redefine environmental science in the process.

This is hands-on impact. This is real-world science.

Biology students in the Ecosystems course were super pumped (get it? pumped!) to travel with Dr. Bechtold to the Lock Haven City Wastewater Treatment Plant to see ecosystem processes in action. Thanks David! You guys do amazing work for the City.

They explored nutrient cycling, phosphorus removal, pH regulation, and the roles of nitrification and denitrification in water treatment, following the process from wastewater to final effluent along the Bald Eagle River in Castanea.

Experiences like this help bring ecology to life—connecting theory to practice and career opportunities and highlighting the importance of sustainable water management. Thanks for the photobomb Rhys!
