Commonwealth University-Lock Haven A small, public university located on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in the scenic mountain Come Home to The Haven - Go Bald Eagles!

The Central State Normal School, was founded in 1870 and chartered to prepare teachers for the public schools. Subsequently, changes in its mission led to changes in name, to State Teachers College at Lock Haven (1926), to Lock Haven State College (1960), to Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania (1983) to Commonwealth University-Lock Haven (2022). Lock Haven is one of 14 institutions within Pennsy

lvania's State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). Not only has the mission and vision of Lock Haven expanded over the years, but also the physical environment and facilities have seen extensive changes. Due to increases in numbers of students, from approximately 600 in the 1940s to over 2,000 in 1970, and current enrollments at approximately 3,000 students, the campus has been modernized with the addition of many new buildings and residence halls.

‼️🚨 Commonwealth University - Lock Haven will be closed today, September 3, 2026 due to heavy rainfall overnight and resulting impacts throughout the county and on campus.

Essential employees are expected to report to campus.

Per our Inclement Weather Policy, in-person instruction and extracurricular activities at the Lock Haven campus are cancelled.

Online courses may continue as scheduled.

From The Haven to Virginia Military Institute. 🦅💪

Recent CU-Lock Haven athletic training graduate Jenna Smith turned the classroom into hands-on experience, completing clinical rotations in everything from collegiate athletics to rehabilitation and secondary schools, including a semester-long immersion at NCAA Division I VMI.

The result? More experience, more confidence and preparation for what comes next.

CU-Lock Haven athletic training graduate student Ari Newlen recently completed a semester-long clinical immersion in outpatient orthopedics, gaining hands-on experience at St. Luke’s University Health Network and WellSpan Health.

From orthopedic evaluations and rehabilitation planning to observing surgeries and collaborating with interdisciplinary health care teams, Ari worked with diverse patient populations and expanded her clinical expertise beyond traditional athletic settings.

“The opportunity to work in outpatient orthopedics strengthened my clinical skills and reinforced the importance of continuing to grow the athletic training profession,” said Newlen.
