Struggling to engage a child in daily Ling 6/7 checks? One of our graduate students found that when you include a favorite stuffed animal, the Ling 6/7 becomes an enjoyable language experience. Of course the stuffed animal will need a hearing aid, CI, or Baha. It may even need a loop around his neck to connect to the FM system.

LSL Ins and Outs// What is an itinerant teacher?⠀

Itinerant/ Support Teachers assist and support schools as part of the school education team. They can provide advice on reasonable adaptations/modifications for children with a confirmed hearing loss for children from the age of diagnosis through 12th Grade. Based off of need in an assigned geographical area, a school district may hire an itinerant teacher to travel between buildings and sometimes districts to support children with hearing loss in their school settings. Itinerant teachers can provide direct service (from daily, weekly, or monthly, quarterly) to the child with hearing loss, consult with staff regarding best practices, and/or support families. These direct services can include working on language development, preteaching content so a child has better access throughout their week, and more!⠀

LSL Ins and Outs// What are the different jobs available to someone with a Masters in Deaf Education?⠀

Deaf educators with LSL experience are needed to work as classroom teachers, early interventionists, and itinerant teachers in private and school settings. This includes parent coaching and working closely with families of children with hearing loss and their caretakers in their homes. Check out our professional spotlights to find out more about these jobs.⠀

I knew I wanted to work with children in small groups and individually. As a Deaf Educator with LSL experience, I do a lot of individualized therapy sessions focusing on my student’s specific needs and get to guide them in group settings as they learn to play, talk and socialize with peers their own age. ⠀

LSL Ins and Outs// What are the different jobs available to someone with LSL experience for an SLP?⠀

Speech Language Pathologists with training specific to Listening and Spoken Language work in hospitals with cochlear implant teams, early intervention programs, private practice programs, school settings and as itinerant service providers for school districts or state level programs. They provide services in person or via tele-intervention. ⠀

At professional conferences, I love to talk with other SLPs and glean from their experiences. For some, their caseloads are made up entirely of children with hearing loss. Others work with a wide array of children with special needs. Of the SLPs I've met in continuing education settings, the veterans in the field have consistently expressed how much they wish they had access to LSL training from the start. They count our graduate students at USU as very fortunate to have this additional training. ⠀
