Sociology is the study of the human individual and human groups. It systematically describes and explains group behavior, the interaction of the individual with the group, and the interactions of groups with each other. Sociology offers a broad foundation for understanding human behavior and encourages the development of critical thinking. Majors will be able to think critically, to analyze everyd

ay events in light of larger social institutions and societal trends. Required sociology classes concern how people in different societies organize and control their societies, critical issues in sociology as they have developed through history, and statistical methods for analyzing sociological data. Students also select courses from three different areas:

Social Problems classes focus on topics such as retirement and other aspects of aging, the causes and prevention of crime and juvenile delinquency, and the cultural characteristics of minority groups. Groups and Institutions courses look at collective behavior, the organization of communities, the development of sex roles, economic systems, educational systems, and social inequality. Population, Environment and Development courses deal with the effects of the environment on human behavior and social organization and the consequences of different patterns of population growth and settlement.

Two of our Sociology professors and a Ph.D. student conducted research that is now a source in an article in New York Magazine. The story "COVID-19’s Racial Death Gap was Predictable," by Zak Cheney-Rice, relies on the results of research conducted by Drs. Eric Reither, prof of sociology, and assistant prof Sojung Lim, with doctoral student Max Roberts. See article at https://nym.ag/3b7MDai
The research was funded in part by Utah Agricultural Experiment Station.
