It was CHaSS week this last week and the college had various events. The alumni talk on Friday was quite good and had lots of ideas that supported the value of a broad education, but the idea I think I liked best was to make sure you always have higher gratitude than expectations. You can have a lot of positive expectations, just have even more gratitude.

On the radio yesterday they were talking about the strong connection between writing and reading. This was interesting becasue I had just gotten a link sent to me that was discussing how much reading improved writing. So with summer coming on, I encourage you to do some reading just for FUN. :-) Two quick suggestions 1. an very entertaining nonfiction book that has lots of "communication" connections is "Made to Stick" by Chip and Dan Heath. 2. a fiction book I found to be humorous, light and just good for a change of pace from much of what I usually read, is "Warbreaker" by Brandon Sanderson. Feel free to offer any other suggestions. I always love to hear about a great book.

I just saw some interesting research that indicates self control is an exhaustible resource. So we can run out of it without breaks that give variety and do not require concentrated self control (one of the problems with new year resolutions). This research supports the notion of taking breaks during the day from concentrated problem-solving, etc.. Often a bit of time or a break can help us handle difficult communication situations better. This helps explain why. Even with good intentions giving ourselves short breaks away from stressful situations helps us handle them better and we can avoid saying something we really wish we had not. So smile and take a little break.

Joy can be real only if people look upon their life as a service, and have a definite object in life outside themselves and their personal happiness. -- Leo Tolstoy
I think that is why the Communication studies program is such a joyful one. It encourages us to look beyond ourselves to others.

As many of you know, I serve as a board member on the Mali Rising Foundation, a charitable foundation which builds schools in Mali, Africa. Our foundation is currently participating in the Chase Community Giving program. Under that program, Chase is giving away $5 million to local charities. The rules are fairly simple with the charities which get the most Facebook "likes" getting the money. As of yesterday, we stood in 179th place among the participating charities. Today we dropped to 246th place. We have to be in the top 196 places to receive any grants from Chase.

Please consider helping us out by voting for the Foundation today. The link is below. Please also feel free to spread the word to those you know. This would be a great opportunity for students, schools, and organizations looking for a good cause to support without requiring any donation other than 2-3 minutes of your time.
