Summer often brings changes in how we move — more walking, hiking, recreation, travel, work shifts, and outdoor activity. ☀️👣

Our bodies are constantly adapting to the demands we place on them. Connective tissues like fascia play an important role in movement, stability, force transfer, and recovery throughout the body.

Overuse injuries such as plantar fasciitis can sometimes occur when activity increases faster than tissues are prepared for — but movement itself is also often part of the recovery process.

Understanding how the body adapts to movement is one example of the connections between kinesiology, health science, recreation, and lifetime activity.

As summer activities increase, remember: gradual progression and recovery matter too.

We are proud to celebrate an important international achievement by Francisco Javier López Frías, a faculty member in our department, who has been inducted into the Academy of Sciences of Physical Activity and Sport of Spain.

For context, this is a newly established national academy in Spain that brings together leading scholars in the sciences of physical activity and sport from across the country. Its membership recognizes individuals whose research and academic contributions have had a significant impact on the advancement of the field.

The Academy is supported by more than 160 national and international organizations, including Spain’s Higher Sports Council, the Spanish Olympic Committee, and the Royal Household, underscoring its national significance.

This honor reflects the global reach and scholarly impact of research within our department, and we extend our warmest congratulations to Javi on this distinguished recognition.

Didn’t get the answer you hoped for this application cycle?

We’re okay being the second choice. Because sometimes the “in-between step” becomes the thing that helps students come back stronger the next time they apply.

At USU, through our MPH in Health Education or MS in Kinesiology program students gain graduate-level experience, research skills, leadership opportunities, and deeper knowledge in health and wellness while continuing to work toward future healthcare careers and professional programs.

We’ve seen students use these programs to strengthen applications, build confidence, and create new opportunities for themselves.

A different path can still move you forward.

Memorial Day is a time when many gather with family and friends, and also an opportunity for reflection on the courage and sacrifice of U.S. Armed Forces service members who have given their lives in service to the country.

As a university department, we join in honoring their service with respect and gratitude, and we remember the families and loved ones who continue to carry their legacy forward.

This past April, we hosted interdisciplinary faculty and graduate student panels exploring the personal, social, and scholarly dimensions of soccer and the upcoming 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. Panelists reflected on their earliest World Cup memories, what draws them to the game, and how their research connects to soccer’s global impact.

Thank you to Javi and Dylan for preparing and coordinating the interdisciplinary faculty and student panels this past semester to bring these conversations together. As excitement builds toward the kickoff of the 2026 World Cup on June 11, we hope these discussions continue to enrich how the game is experienced and understood.
