Join us for the next BCE Seminar Series featuring Floriano Ferreira, an engineer and executive leader with more than 25 years of experience in waste-to-value and bioenergy.

His seminar, “Turning Organic Waste into Valuable Renewable Resources Through a Common and Well-Proven Biological Process,” will explore how industrial-scale anaerobic digestion and biogas plants can transform organic waste into renewable gas, nutrient-rich digestate, and other valuable resources.

Floriano will also discuss real-world operational challenges, resource recovery, process stability, and the role these technologies can play in a more circular and low-carbon economy.

Meet Dr. Lizbeth de la Cruz, Keynote Speaker at the 2026 Intermountain Biological Engineering Conference (IBEC) at Utah State University.

Dr. de la Cruz is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Biological Sciences and Biomedical Sciences at Idaho State University. Her research explores how aging alters peripheral nervous system regulation and insulin secretion through electrophysiological and imaging approaches.

Her work focuses on the connections between aging, peripheral nervous system regulation, insulin secretion, and metabolic health, with the goal of better understanding age-associated metabolic diseases and mechanisms that may promote healthier aging.

Take a quick tour with Zoe Johnson of the undergraduate study space on the fourth floor of the Engineering Building!

The space gives students a place to study, work with classmates, relax between classes, or grab lunch. It includes a whiteboard for working through problems, a microwave, study areas, a reservable private room with a TV for presentations, and lockers for student use.

Dr. Ronald Sims recently spoke with ENGR 1010 students, introducing them to opportunities within Utah State University’s Department of Biological & Chemical Engineering. (BCE)

As part of USU’s Engineering Foundations experience, students have an opportunity to learn more about engineering disciplines as they begin identifying the path that best fits their interests.

Presentations like this give BCE the opportunity to connect with first-year engineering students and show them where biological and chemical engineering can lead, from research and innovation to solving real-world challenges.

We’re excited to introduce more students to BCE and the opportunities waiting for them at Utah State!

Join the Utah State University Department of Biological & Chemical Engineering Seminar Series featuring Dr. Ryan Jackson, R. Gaurth Hansen Associate Professor at Utah State University.

“How Basic Research on Bacterial Immune Systems Revealed a Biotechnology for Selectively Killing Cells”

Dr. Jackson will explain how his research team used bioinformatics, microbiology, biochemistry, and structural tools to define the structure and function of distinct CRISPR systems. He will also discuss how these systems were repurposed into novel biotechnologies, including RNA diagnostic tools and a tool that selectively kills cancer cells while sparing healthy cells.

Getting a spider and its nearly invisible silk into focus takes patience—and some engineering skills. 🕷️🎥

During his internship in Taiwan, Benjamin “Ben” Huntzinger, a Biological Engineering student and research assistant at Utah State University, helped document how spiders zipline along silk.

Ben learned to operate a new high-speed camera and experimented with lighting, angles, and background contrast to capture the movement. A calibrated background provided a reference for measurements, while math and physics helped him describe the behavior and explore its biomechanics—the movement and forces involved in living systems.

He also shared what he learned, helping another student film courtship behavior in a different spider species.

At USU, Ben works with microalgae biofilms and wastewater treatment research, gaining experience with Rotating Algal Biofilm Reactors (RABRs), water quality testing, and biomass measurements.

These experiences show the range of opportunities within biological engineering and its connection to USU’s Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering: studying how living systems work and applying that knowledge to practical problems.

Join us for a seminar featuring Dr. Chuancheng Duan, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Utah.

Electrochemical Devices for Decarbonization and Electrification

Dr. Duan will discuss recent efforts to develop electrochemical devices based on advanced ionic materials and catalytic interfaces for sustainable energy and chemical conversion. Topics will include solid oxide and protonic ceramic fuel cells and electrolyzers, reversible electrochemical energy conversion, electrochemical production of fuels and chemicals, and emerging applications in low-carbon industrial processes.

The seminar will also explore how materials design, interfacial chemistry, and device engineering can improve efficiency, durability, and functionality for renewable electricity, chemical manufacturing, energy storage, and decarbonization of difficult-to-electrify sectors.

📢 BCE Students: UBEC 2026 Is Coming Up!

The Utah Biomedical Engineering Conference (UBEC) 2026 will take place October 1–2, bringing together students, researchers, and professionals from Utah’s biomedical engineering community.

We’re especially excited that Dr. Elizabeth Vargis from Utah State University will be one of this year’s keynote speakers, presenting on October 2 at the S.J. Quinney College of Law.

Tony Chou from Route 92 Medical will also present during the networking night on October 1 at the University of Utah Alumni House.

⚠️ Important Deadlines
• Conference registration: September 4
• Poster judging abstract deadline: September 18
• Final abstract submission deadline: September 25

Students who register and order by the September 4 deadline can also receive a free conference T-shirt.

Please note that conference registration and abstract submission are separate, so students interested in presenting must complete both.
