-->The team is now tracking how these plants expand their territory — whether mature sagebrush plants will continue to act as productive seed sources after being translocated, and if these new plants survive and thrive.

The idea of wild horses is steeped in romanticism, but management of the nonnative animal is the subject of debate between managers, horse advocates, livestock producers, and scientists due to its effect on the environment. Utah State University researchers are trying to steer the conversation in a productive way.

“Reconciling romantic ideals with the reality of feral horses on sensitive desert rangelands is a socially intractable problem,” Stoner muses. “It’s hard enough to figure out how we do this non-lethally, humanely, and sustainably. But the real challenge is conveying the magnitude and consequences of a problem that largely affects rural America to a public that is satisfied with the Hollywood version of the story.”
