USU Brazil Initiative 2016

USU Brazil Initiative 2016 Exploring Identity Through Difference: An Immersive Experience of Race and Class in Brazil. Sponsored by the USU College of Humanities and Social Sciences

This course will provide students an experiential journey to understand how race and class construct Brazilian identity. The Brazilian patterns of these social systems are remarkably similar to those of America, yet manifest themselves very differently in national discourse. In order to analyze these similarities and differences, students will engage on a three-week experience of Brazilian society

. Students will learn the ethnic history of Brazil through the legacy of slavery and the intersection of race and class through service in the communities of Salvador and São Paulo; and understand community efforts of resistance through the eyes of leader, activists, and artists across Brazil.

Professor Christy Glass and others will be hosting a panel about their involvement in the women's marches around the world. Here's the message from her (also see attached flyer):

Please join us on Monday, January 30th, from 12:00 - 1:00 pm in the TSC Center Colony Room for a panel discussion titled, "USU Women: Why We March." The panel will feature USU faculty and students who attended the Women's March in Washington D.C. or one of several sister marches across the state. The purpose of the event is to engage in a lively discussion of the factors that motivated members of the USU community to participate in this historic event, which drew over 3 million participants worldwide.

Did you know why this weekend is important? It is the Martin Luther King Jr Day! I know we all enjoy having a day off from school, but this day is important to remember for what MLK sacrificed in the Civil Rights movement. Make sure to stop by our vigil on Tuesday to learn more and hear from Natasha Carrizosa, an award-winning poet from Texas!

Don't forget to come out and see up tomorrow evening at 7pm in the TSC Auditorium. Doors at 6:30.
