As our community continues to process the tragic incident and chemical release that occurred on Tuesday at the Nippon Dynawave site, local, state, and federal agencies remain actively engaged in response and environmental protection efforts.

As part of the response effort, Cowlitz Diking District No. 1 is pumping water through the Reynolds Way Industrial Pumping Station under the direction of the EPA and Washington Department of Ecology. City crews are also flushing fire hydrants and adding clean water into the drainage system to help keep contaminated water away from neighborhoods, waterways, and the City’s water supply.

As a result of these operations, the campus and surrounding community may experience temporary reductions in water pressure, increased utility or emergency response activity, traffic delays, or restricted access to nearby waterways and drainage areas. Community members may also notice pumping activity, hydrant flushing, or increased water movement in local ditch systems.

At this time, the City has stated that the drinking water remains safe and is being continuously monitored.

Out of caution, community members are asked to avoid drainage ditches, sloughs, and waterways in affected areas while operations continue.

There is no action required from the campus community at this time. Lower Columbia College will continue monitoring updates from responding agencies and will share additional information if conditions change.

Students needing support are encouraged to contact Counseling Services. Employees may access support resources through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Thank you for your patience, compassion, and care for one another during this challenging time.

CDID No. 1, under oversight from the EPA and Washington Department of Ecology, has resumed pumping operations at the Reynolds Way Industrial Pumping Station. The purpose of this operation is to draw contaminated water away from nearby sloughs, residential areas, and the City’s water supply system.

As part of this effort, City water crews are conducting hydrant flushing operations to add additional clean water into the stormwater drainage system, which flows into the ditch system. This added water helps prevent contaminated water from flowing back toward town. The City is also diverting water from the Cowlitz River intake structure into Ditch 3 to increase water flow through the system.

Residents in areas where flushing is occurring may notice temporary drops in water pressure while crews are working. Water crews will continue operations into the evening as part of these protective measures.

The City’s drinking water remains safe to drink and is continuously monitored. The hydrant flushing operations are part of a proactive effort to protect waterways and the community’s water system.

The public is asked to avoid drainage ditches and waterways in the affected areas while operations are underway.

A devastating industrial accident occurred at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging facility, resulting in critical injuries and a tragic loss of life.

Because we are such a tight-knit region, an event of this scale touches almost all of us. So many of our students, faculty, and staff have deep roots in our local industries, or have loved ones serving as first responders. We are grieving alongside the affected families, coworkers, and the emergency crews working tirelessly on the scene.

Support & Resources:
Processing a tragedy like this is incredibly difficult, even if you weren't directly impacted. Please remember to give yourself and those around you a little extra grace right now. If you need a safe space or someone to talk to, please utilize our campus resources:

- For Students: Our Counseling Services team is available and ready to support you.
- For Faculty & Staff: Mental health and grief resources can be accessed through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

For the most immediate and accurate information, please follow the Cowlitz County Department of Emergency Management page.

Campus Safety Update:
We know news like this can cause immediate concern on our LCC campus. Our leadership team and Campus Safety have been closely tracking the situation. Local emergency management has confirmed that there is no threat to the surrounding community, and no shelter-in-place orders are in effect for our campus. Our campus remains secure, and no immediate action is required.

Please take care of yourselves and look out for one another. We are in this together.
