Lower Columbia College Running Start Running Start is a WA State partnership between community & technical colleges and local high schools

Running Start is a statewide partnership between community and technical colleges and local high schools. Running Start is a program that allows 11th and 12th-grade students to take college courses at Washington's 34 community and technical colleges, including Lower Columbia College. Students earn both high school and college credits for these courses. Lower Columbia College does not discriminate

🎓✨ Senior Spotlight: Makenzie Henthorn ✨🎓

Congratulations to Running Start student Makenzie Henthorn on an incredible achievement! This spring, Makenzie will graduate from Mark Morris High School with her high school diploma and from Lower Columbia College with her Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) degree.

This fall, Makenzie will continue her academic and athletic journey at the University of Montana, where she plans to major in Biology and has earned a softball athletic scholarship.

During her time at LCC, Makenzie consistently demonstrated excellence in the classroom, earning a place on the President's List and the Dean's List multiple times. Outside of academics, she spent all four years playing high school softball and also competed in tournament softball.

When she's not on the field, Makenzie enjoys softball, baking, and surfing.

💙 Makenzie would like to thank her parents "for their constant support and pushing me to better myself every day."

🎓 Senior Spotlight: Bode Davis 🎓

Join us in celebrating Bode Davis on his outstanding accomplishments!
Bode will graduate from Toutle Lake High School with his high school diploma while also earning his Associate of Arts degree from Lower Columbia College through the Running Start program.

After graduation, Bode plans to attend the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, where he will major in Aquatic Conservation and Ecology. His hard work and dedication have earned him scholarships from the University of Washington, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Oregon State University.🐟🎣

Throughout high school and college, Bode has been recognized for his academic excellence, earning a place on the LCC President’s List, LCC Dean’s List, and the Toutle Lake High School Honor Roll. Beyond the classroom, he was named Student Angler of the Year twice at Mt. St. Helens.

Bode has also worked full-time for Dave’s Guide Service as a deckhand for the past two years, combining his passion for fishing with valuable hands-on experience. In his free time, he enjoys fishing and playing guitar.🎶 🎵

Bode would like to thank his parents, sister, mentors, and Running Start advisor Maggie for their support and encouragement throughout his journey.

🎓 Senior Spotlight: Lacy Williams-Twete 🎓

Join us in celebrating Lacy Williams-Twete, a remarkable Running Start student who is graduating from Castle Rock High School while also earning her Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) degree from Lower Columbia College!

Lacy plans to pursue a career in Nursing and has already demonstrated exceptional dedication to her education. During her first quarter at Lower Columbia College, she earned a place on the President’s List, adding to a long list of academic accomplishments that includes leadership recognition and perfect attendance awards.👩‍⚕️ ⚕️

A former competitive swimmer for nine years, Lacy credits the sport with teaching her discipline, dedication, and time management. Though she recently stepped away from swimming to focus on college and her future career, those lessons continue to guide her success.🏊‍♀️

Outside of academics, Lacy enjoys staying active, spending time outdoors, going on drives, traveling, exploring new places, and making memories with family and friends.

Lacy shares her gratitude with her parents for their unwavering support, her grandparents for teaching her the importance of kindness and helping others, and Mrs. Palmer and her teachers for their encouragement throughout her journey.

🎓 Senior Spotlight: Mara Slabu 🎓

Join us in celebrating Mara Slabu, an outstanding Running Start student whose dedication, leadership, and academic excellence have made a lasting impact both in and out of the classroom. This spring, Mara will graduate from Mark Morris High School with her high school diploma and from Lower Columbia College with her Associate of Biology (DTA/MRP) degree.

Mara will continue her educational journey at the University of Washington, where she plans to study Biology.🧬 🧫 👩‍🔬

Throughout her time at LCC and Mark Morris, Mara has earned an impressive list of honors and scholarships, including the Jane Kirkpatrick Galliher Memorial Scholarship, Ken Makinen Education Award Scholarship, and recognition for outstanding academic achievement through the President’s List, Honor Roll, and Hall of Honors Award. She has also excelled in speech and debate, earning gold and bronze medals at state and national competitions, as well as a season-long debate sweepstakes ranking.

A passionate leader and engaged student, Mara currently serves as Executive Director of the LCC Student Government (ASLCC) and is a member of the LCC Fighting Smelt Forensics Team, where she serves as Team Captain. Her involvement also includes DECA, FBLA, student government leadership, and volunteer work with the Cowlitz County Humane Society.🐟

When she’s not leading organizations or pursuing academic excellence, Mara enjoys spending time with friends and family, traveling, reading, and catching up on a well-earned nap.

Mara would like to thank her parents and sister for their unwavering support throughout her journey, along with her speech and debate teammates and coaches for their encouragement, guidance, and friendship.

For many students, balancing the demands of high school is enough of a challenge. For Mara Slabu, it was just the baseline. This spring, Mara is celebrating a monumental double milestone: graduating from Mark Morris High School while simultaneously earning her Biology DTA/MRP degree from Lower Columbia College (LCC) through the Running Start program.

🎓 Senior Spotlight: Daniela Breslin 🎓

Join us in celebrating Daniela Breslin, a dedicated Running Start student whose hard work and determination have led to an incredible achievement! This spring, Daniela will graduate from Kalama High School with her high school diploma and from Lower Columbia College with her Associate of Arts Direct Transfer Agreement (AA-DTA) degree.

Daniela will be attending New Mexico State University to pursue a degree in Elementary Education, where she hopes to make a positive impact on future generations of students.🍎 🏫

During her time at LCC, Daniela earned the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) Scholarship and the 1888 Leadership Out-of-State Scholarship. She also achieved academic excellence by earning President’s List or Dean’s List honors for five consecutive quarters.

Beyond the classroom, Daniela has been actively involved in National Honor Society (NHS), community service activities, and served as a Campus Counselor for the past three years. She also works at a local restaurant, enjoys connecting with her community, and loves spending time reading, crafting, playing with her dogs, and enjoying the outdoors with family and friends.

When reflecting on her journey, Daniela shared her gratitude for the teachers, advisors, counselors, family and friends who have supported and encouraged her every step of the way.

Congratulations, Daniela! Your dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving others will take you far. We can't wait to see all that you accomplish in the future! 🌟🎓💜

🎓 Senior Spotlight: Mikayla Sorenson 🎓

Join us in celebrating Mikayla Sorenson, an outstanding Running Start student who will be graduating from R.A. Long High School with her high school diploma and from Lower Columbia College with her Associate of Arts degree!

Throughout her academic journey, Mikayla has excelled both in the classroom and in her community, earning recognition on the President’s List and Dean’s List multiple times.

Outside of academics, Mikayla has been actively involved in softball throughout her senior year and volunteers through her church’s kid ministry program, where she enjoys serving and supporting younger children.

Mikayla has also demonstrated a strong work ethic, working at a daycare since she was 16 years old. She loves helping and working with children and has gained valuable experience through her years of dedication and service.

In her free time, Mikayla enjoys spending time outdoors, going on hikes, and taking walks with her dog.🐶 🥾

When reflecting on those who have supported her along the way, Mikayla shared:

"I want to give a special thanks to my family for always supporting me and pushing me to challenge myself and be my best. I’m so grateful for everything you’ve done for me. I would also like to thank the Lord for guiding me and being with me every step of the way. And of course, thank you to my dog for always sitting by my side through all the stressful assignments—you made it all a little easier."
