Dr. Drus’s Animal Care class visited Dreams Go On, a therapeutic horseback riding facility that offers riding sessions for adults and children with physical challenges, as well as for individuals receiving mental health, behavioral health, or family therapy services. During the visit, students learned about basic horse care, horse gaits, horse anatomy, and equine psychology. They also gained hands-on experience leading horses, applying leg wraps, grooming, and more.

Dr. Drus’s Animal Care class visited Valewood Farms, where they had the opportunity to go behind the scenes. Students learned about dairy cow husbandry, the complexities of running a family business, and the education and technology required to make Valewood a successful operation. Dr. Drus’s Animal Care class learned about general chicken husbandry, as well as chicken anatomy to build a broader understanding of bird anatomy and care requirements. Students then gained hands-on experience handling chickens and checking them for a variety of health issues. All of the birds received a clean bill of health. The visiting chickens were from Dr. Drus’ own flock: Axel Rose, Goldy, Dottie, and Boots.

Dr. Drus’s Animal Care class visited a local aquaponics greenhouse. Aquaponics uses fish waste to supply nutrients to plants grown in a hydroponic system. During the visit, the class conducted a tilapia count and biomass assessment for the farmer and brought several fish back to the SFU campus for a breeding project.
