We, the members of Chi Alpha Psi, were deeply saddened by the mass shooting that claimed the lives of eight people -- six of whom were Asian American women -- on March 16th.
We were also angered by the misogyny and anti-Asian racism that motivated these murders, as well as the 3,795 hate incidents committed against Asian Americans and reported to Stop AAPI Hate between March 2020 and February 2021.
As one of our core values, Chi Alpha Psi is committed to and stands in solidarity with the Asian American community. We expect our members to remain dedicated to confronting and dismantling all forms of bigotry, including the fearmongering surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic which has contributed to the uptick in racial violence towards Asian Americans.
If, like many of us, you find yourself unsure of how to help, we ask that you do the following:
Donate to and support organizations like Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAAJ), the Asian American Advocacy Fund (AAAF), the Center for Pan Asian Community Services (CPACS), and others centered around helping and protecting Asian Americans, as well as mutual aid funds. These organizations often have petitions, which you can sign, to.
Support local Asian-owned businesses in your area, which have been hit hard by the pandemic.
Make a commitment to continually educate yourself on the histories of racism and xenophobic discrimination towards Asians in the United States, utilizing books, documentaries and other resources to develop your understanding.
And, as always: see something, say something. We refuse to be silent.
Signed,
Chi Alpha Psi 2020-2021 Board
