Learn all about “The Business of News” in Fall 2026! 📣

JOUR 4998-01 The Business of News will debut in the fall and be taught by the department’s new professor, Dr. Sunah Lee. The course will explore the ways news organizations navigate today’s intense financial and technological pressures while also maintaining editorial independence.

Dr. Lee has extensive and incredible journalism experience, including her many years spent as a broadcaster on South Korea’s major 24-hour cable news channel.

The Business of News is open to all journalism majors and minors and will count as an upper-division elective.

Last week, another guest speaker visited Prof. Laila Muhammad’s Journalism Entertainment class.

Since graduating from USC in 2018, Chanele Czopp has built an impressive career producing stories for outlets like E! Networks, NBC News, and CNN. She currently works as a producer at NBCUniversal, where she has spent the past three years creating content reels, lifestyle segments, pop-up features, and entertainment coverage in L.A.

During her visit to class, Czopp provided an overview of what producing entails and emphasized the importance of diversifying content to keep it fresh and engaging for viewers.🤳🏻

LMU Nature Writing students took learning beyond the classroom this semester. 🌿

Last weekend, the class explored Griffith Park, hiking from Trails Cafe to the Griffith Observatory with Prof. Evelyn McDonnell. The Observatory was buzzing during the annual Yuri’s Night, which celebrates human space exploration—perfect timing for students to reflect on the Artemis II astronauts’ return to Earth and consider our planet’s place in the cosmos, along with the ethics of space travel.

In February, students headed to San Pedro for another immersive experience, visiting the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Cabrillo Beach, and the Marine Mammal Care Center to connect with our local coastal environment.

Huge thanks to the BCLA Dean’s Office for supporting these hands-on learning opportunities!

Join us as we welcome LAist reporter and Weekend Edition host Josie Huang to the Journalism Village on April 14! 📹

With over a decade of experience at Southern California Public Radio, Huang brings powerful insight into her coverage of Asian American communities. She’s also known for her advocacy for press freedom; she reached a $700,000 settlement with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department related to her wrongful and violent arrest while reporting on a protest — an experience she used to highlight the importance of protecting journalists’ rights.

The event is hosted by LMU’s chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association.
