Join us for: Prioritizing Foster Youth in Student Housing: An Action Summit for LACCD and Partners.

At this important event, LACCD and key community partners will engage in discussions to develop key strategies focused on student housing solutions for foster youth and help flip the pernicious foster care-to-homelessness pipeline into a foster care-to-prosperity pipeline.

This event builds on visionary work by the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees, who unanimously approved a resolution this spring to set aside 20% of its emerging student housing program for current and former foster youth. The Resolution, authored by Board President Sara Hernandez and co-sponsored by nearly the entire board, will help the District's 1,750 current and former foster youth get the housing they need to achieve their full academic potential.

Meet Jamie, a Los Angeles Harbor College student pursuing an Associate Degree for Transfer in Elementary Teacher Education. Inspired by the educators who supported her throughout her journey, she hopes to become a teacher who creates safe, inclusive spaces where students can overcome self-doubt and reach their full potential.

Jamie’s resilience and determination have shaped both her educational journey and personal growth. After her mother was diagnosed with cancer when Jamie was just eighteen, she learned the importance of perseverance, hope, and strength during life’s most difficult moments. Despite these challenges, Jamie has remained resilient and deeply involved at LAHC as a student worker, A*O Senator for Student Advocacy, and participant in programs like MESA, EOPS, and Harbor Advantage. As she prepares to transfer to a UC or CSU in Fall 2026, Jamie continues to represent the leadership, perseverance, and spirit of Los Angeles Harbor College.

Nigel Brooks came to Los Angeles City College (LACC) intending to pursue radiologic technology, but after taking an introductory psychology course soon inspired him to change direction and earn a Psychology for Transfer degree instead. Since then, he has embraced LACC’s supportive community, taking part in the Honors program and campus resources that have shaped both his academic and personal growth.

Outside the classroom, Nigel serves as president of the Forever Jung Psychology Club and hopes to transfer to USC to study neuropsychology and become a clinical psychologist. LACC has given him a stronger sense of belonging, purpose, and opportunity, and we wish Nigel and all LACCD students continued success as they pursue greater beginnings across our colleges.
