USC History Department

USC History Department One of the largest humanities departments in the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, & Sciences at USC

History is one of the largest humanities departments in the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. We are both a dynamic source of cutting-edge humanities research and one of the largest providers of undergraduate courses in the University of Southern California. The History Department is dedicated to core values, which we pursue with a diverse and growing faculty working at the forefron

t of historical scholarship in a wide range of fields.

*Undergraduate Education*
As one of the largest providers of undergraduate general education courses in addition to our majors, the faculty of the History Department takes teaching seriously. Our professors have received recognition and awards for their teaching, and we continuously work to improve the breadth, depth, and quality of our undergraduate courses. Our graduate student teaching assistant have also won accolades for their teaching, while the Department’s TA training program has become the basis for teaching instruction across the wider campus community.

*Outstanding Graduate Education*
Our graduate program ranks among the best in the nation, supported by the diversity of our faculty and the resources available both at USC and in the greater Los Angeles area. Our commitment to supporting and professionalizing our graduate students helps them to become top-tier researchers and instructors.

*A Community of Scholars*
At its core, the History Department is a community of scholars. Our award-winning faculty work in collaboration within the department, across the university, and with regional and national research institutions. The faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students of the History Department are a gathering of minds inquiring into the human past in an environment of academic rigor. Whether a student is joining us for a general education requirement, an undergraduate degree, a public lecture, or graduate training, all who are interested in the method and pursuit of history are welcome

We are looking for two undergraduate research interns to help with the research for our Chinatown History Project; this is a multidisciplinary investigation of the original Los Angeles Chinatown which was demolished in the 1930s to make way for Union Station. The appointment is for this academic year. The research interns would put in approximately 200 hours of work – spread out as she or he wishes --- and the position comes with a $2000 stipend. Much of the work would be pursued in the archives of the Seaver Center at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, which is just across Exposition Blvd. from USC.

The History Department is launching a new film series! The films, suggested by students, faculty, and staff will range widely in genre. Some will be documentaries. Others may be period pieces that raise questions about, among other things, the genre of historical fiction. Still others will embody or address methodological issues of the sorts that historians confront. But they will all be fantastic films and offer food for thought and discussion. So shall we. Indeed, at each event we shall provide hearty, delicious, and nutritious meal. And after each screening we shall host an informal discussion -- think book or film club -- for those members of our community who wish to reflect collectively on the film!

Please join us for our inaugural screening of the fascinating, entertaining, quirky, and award-winning German film from 1990, The Nasty Girl (Das schreckliche Mädchen). | April 15 , SOS 250.

RSVP here https://forms.gle/uMnAgnhASWUXkmpVA or by emailing Jason Glenn ([email protected]).

Questions or suggestions for films we might screen later in the series? Feel free to contact Jason Glenn ([email protected]).
