2) Education Asset Preservation
2.

A part of Occidental's endowment, the Blyth Fund is a premier six-figure, student-managed investment portfolio. The Blyth Fund offers students hands-on experience in investment management and broadens interest in finance among some of Oxy’s most promising of students. The Fund was initially established in 1977 with a gift from Richard Link, and named in honor of legendary banker Charles Blyth. Bly

th Funds were also initially created at Stanford and Caltech, but only Stanford's remains active today. Our Fund is wholly student managed. We choose a 14-person board each spring, study the stock market and maintain a portfolio. We buy and sell as we see fit. Throughout its history, the Blyth Fund has maintained two primary goals:

1. Education

We strongly believe that success in investing is not a product of pure business knowledge, but of intelligence and diversity of experience combined with an innate desire to learn. Directors major in a wide variety of fields, including science, politics, economics, diplomacy, mathematics, and many others. We seek to leverage our abilities as intelligent and diverse students in order to identify investment opportunities and differentiate ourselves from most investors. Equally important, all investment opportunities are analyzed from different angles, utilizing our wide array of unique skill sets.

: Nick Descamps, Class of 2017
Photo Caption: Photo Description: Me after climbing Trapper Peak (elevation 10,157 ft) in Montana.

Bio: My name is Nick Descamps and I am a Senior DWA Major, Chinese Studies Minor. I am generally interested in finance and want to know the policy and government regulation side of things. Also I had several friends who were on the fund. It is incredible to be able to gain this amount of experience in college. I enjoy going to the meetings every week and increasing my understanding of how the finance sector works. Over the summer I was a Staff Assistant in the Washington, D.C. office of U.S. Senator Steve Daines. I would have dinner with Abraham Lincoln.

Introducing : This week meet the only Blyth Fund director bold enough to kickoff this brand-new hashtag (and the first Blyth Fund post of the 2016-2017 academic year). ***Challenge: try to find him in the attached picture.***

Emiliano R. Vargas, class of 2017
Economics Major

1) What drew you to the Blyth Fund?
Who wouldn't want to learn all about the stock market with some of the chillest people on campus?

2) What does being a Blyth Fund director mean to you?
To me it means being responsible for part of the endowment and ensuring that future generations will be able to use it for educational purposes.

3) If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive), who would it be?
I would have dinner with Hannibal Barca.

4) Ideal evening?
Curled up in a comfy chair on a rainy night next to a fire place reading a good book.

Last night was the last Blyth Fund meeting for the directors from the class of 2016. Matt, Clare, Kwame, and CJ each made unique contributions that have shaped the Fund over these past few years. The Fund will miss these four greatly, but we can't wait to learn about their experiences in the coming years!

Big congratulations to the new President of the Blyth Fund, Spencer Goldman! Spencer was unanimously voted President of the 2016-2017 fund last night. He will undoubtedly share his passion for investing (and possibly Frisbee) with the rest of the new and current directors.

Our Last for the current Blyth Fund! Meet our Chief Economist, Spencer Goldman!

Spencer Goldman, Junior, Economics Major

1) What drew you to Blyth Fund?

I have always loved financial markets and investing so the blyth fund seemed like a great way to learn more about finance and get to know others who were interested.

2) What did you do over the summer?

I was a Research Intern at Hall Capital Partners, a $31 billion asset management firm, in San Francisco. I was able to work with all of their different asset class research teams and as a final project I gave a presentation to the investment committee at the firm on the macroeconomic environment in Japan.

3) If you could have dinner with one person (dead or alive), who would it be?

It would probably be Christian Leone, he is the portfolio manager of Luxor Capital and is one of the smartest people I have ever met. I sat in on a meeting with him over the summer and learned more about financial markets in 30 minutes than I had in the previous 30 days.

4) What Superpower would you like to have?

I would like to be able to read a book instantly. You could become an expert in anything in a matter of minutes, plus it would make cramming for a midterm a lot easier.
