What was used to see in the dark back in the day?Oil lamps! This oil lamp dates from ca. 1000-721 BCE from the Norther Kingdom of Israel. Oil lamps originated as broken bases from Chalcolithic bowls then evolved into highly stylized works of art. They are made of fired clay and functioned by providing a basin to hold oil. The oil was soaked up through a flax wick that would rest in the nozzle of the lamp.

Meet Clifford! No, he is not a big red dog but a mummified cat! The x-rays revealed that the cat's bones had not yet calcified when he died, making him around 2 weeks old when he was sacrificed. The resin and linen make up the bulk of our mummy, so the actual cat inside the wrappings is much smaller than it looks. Clifford was a votive offering for the cat goddess, Bastet, Cats were not usually so young when they were sacrificed, indicating that Egypt was experiencing a shortage of cats in the late period (664 BCE - 323 BCE).

Showcasing our first artifact! This is a Hyksos Scarab made of steatite, ca. 1700 BCE. Scarabs were used primarily as amulets but also as seals for central administration. The scarab beetle was seen as a symbol of the heavenly cycle of the sun god Ra and thus associated with the idea of rebirth of regeneration.
