✨Cluster Spotlight✨ Meet Maiza Ali who took the Global Islam Cluster (Cluster 27) last year! “I absolutely loved the Global Islam cluster because of its incredibly passionate teaching staff and its consistently thought-provoking curriculum. Each lecture drew from a variety of different fields and perspectives, with topics ranging from race to gender; it's difficult to overstate the value of taking a multi-disciplinary course that discusses issues from a non-Eurocentric perspective. Also, being a smaller and newer cluster, there were plenty of opportunities to personally interact with the professors and TAs, which I found to be extremely valuable. I had entered this cluster with the aim of majoring in biology, but exited wanting to double major in two social science-oriented majors!”

“Coming into UCLA as a STEM major, I can say this Cluster reoriented my perspective on the social sciences. It gave me the opportunity to explore interesting and unexpected topics, from the history of East African mosque architecture to the accommodation of Muslim Marriage Practices by US law, and discuss these topics with a tight-knit group of students and professors. My experiences engaging in my own research also taught me skills that I know will stay with me throughout my academic endeavors. Definitely recommend taking this class, it’s a one-of-a-kind and interdisciplinary experience that takes learning about Global Islam and the social sciences to a whole new level.” -Zaid, Global Islam Cluster

📣 Hear what students say about Clusters and learn more about Cluster 20: In*******al Dynamics in American Society and Culture // How can a nation as racially diverse as the United States and a state as ethnically varied as California nurture a sense of unity and community? Looking at social and cultural themes that shape contemporary American life, students explore questions such as, “What is the role of race in society today?” and “How are racial stereotypes produced and sometimes challenged in popular culture?” The cluster engages students in active dialogue and debate to teach them to be culturally fluent in the new multiethnic complexities that have displaced the outdated black-white paradigm of U.S. race relations.

✨Student Spotlight✨ “I had the wonderful opportunity of taking the excellent Global Islam Cluster. The entire teaching team is truly passionate about the course material and incredibly considerate of student concerns. I truly appreciated being able to diversify my knowledge on Islam as a cultural and religious tradition. The valuable critical analytical skills and research and writing skills I developed through this cluster are indispensable and truly positively impacted my first year of college. An interdisciplinary approach to learning about Islam and its vast historical and present-day impacts, alongside a supportive learning environment with a very caring teaching team, are very valuable opportunities to take advantage of!” -Aracely, 2020-2021 Cluster Cohort

✨Cluster M1 Spotlight ✨Food: A Lens for Environment and Sustainability // As the world’s human population surpasses 7 billion — with 1 billion people starving and approximately 1.5 billion over-weight — feeding the global population in a healthy, sustainable way in the face of climate change is perhaps the most urgent challenge of our time. Students in the Food cluster explore the complex connections between food and the environment, focusing on scientific, economic, cultural and social factors. The ubiquitous nature of food makes it a remarkable catalyst for interdisciplinary analysis.
