Dr. Xi Zhu, HPM Faculty, was appointed the Paul Torrens Professor of Healthcare Management. The chair is funded by donations from alumni whose careers were influenced by Torrens, a professor emeritus and member of the school’s faculty since 1972. The endowment provides support to early career faculty members at the Fielding School. Dr. Kenneth Wells, HPM Faculty, has spent years working with veterans in Los Angeles as a clinician and researcher. He also has sung and been a choral director since he was a teenager. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Latinos in California were relatively unlikely to use emergency medical services. But during the pandemic, across much of the state, Latinos’ use of such services — specifically seeking treatment for respiratory ailments — increased more than it did for non-Latino whites, according to a new report by Dr. Arturo Vargas Bustamante, HPM Faculty, and Dr. Hiram Beltran-Sanchez, CHS Faculty.
