🔦 IIGH Spotlight: IIGH in Washington, D.C. for the 2026 Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) Conference

Each month, IIGH shares a spotlight highlighting one of our research, policy initiatives, or student engagement opportunities.

This month, we are spotlighting IIGH’s participation at the annual CUGH Conference.

🤝 CUGH is a longstanding IIGH partner and shares our commitment to health equity.

🌐 IIGH faculty engaged at CUGH with myriad partners and participated in a range of activities. IIGH Research Director Laura Ferguson, for example, chaired the conference’s only panel on SRHR, “Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in a Time of Crisis: Supportive Laws and Policies are Necessary but not Sufficient,” with IIGH Director Sofia Gruskin serving as a panelist. The panel examined opportunities and challenges in the current geopolitical moment, highlighting issues of trust, communication, justice, and accountability while offering examples and entry points for action.

👥 IIGH Director of Policy Engagement Jonathan Cohen also joined a delegation of California-based global health scholars convened by CUGH to engage with federal policymakers, sharing perspectives on the impact of recent funding decisions, the role of universities in shaping global health, and the contributions of global health programs to the state of California.

A delegation of twelve USC students kicked off two weeks in Geneva today alongside the 79th World Health Assembly. A whirlwind tour of the city led them to the Palais de Nations, after which the delegation participated in a Foreign Policy-hosted event on the future of health security and sustainable investment, and met with faculty to agree on daily activities and priorities. This has set the students up to start exploring other events of interest; they will be learning about brain health, sexual and reproductive health, maternal mortality, reforms to the global health architecture and much more.

Coming up soon: you’ll hear from the students themselves as they uncover a day in the life in Geneva during the World Health Assembly.

Through the D***x x USC IIGH Global Initiative on Young People’s Sexual Rights and Health, IIGH and the Los Angeles LGBT Center designed and conducted a mixed-methods study exploring how young people in Los Angeles County understand and experience sexual health, rights, and pleasure.

To share the qualitative findings from the focus groups back with the community, youth researcher Kaden Umaña created the illustrated zine “Youth perspective: Sexual health, rights & pleasure.” The zine translates research findings into an accessible, youth-friendly format grounded in young people’s lived realities and experiences. Learn more about the project and read the zine:
