UCLA Hawai‘i Travel Study Program

UCLA Hawai‘i Travel Study Program Attend the UCLA Hawai‘i Travel Study program for a critical examination of race, ethnicity, history, gender, sexuality, and U.S.

empire in the context of the Hawaiian islands. Hawai‘i is world famous as a “tropical paradise” and also has been heralded as a “racial paradise,” occupying a unique position as a place where “minorities comprise a majority.” During this 5-week program, students can enjoy the sun, sand, and surf while investigating local histories and communities and problematizing issues related to indigeneity, p

olitics, economy, representation, and colonialism. Through field visits, service learning, discussion, and student-led research opportunities, the UCLA Hawai‘i Travel Study program seeks to broaden student understandings of Hawai‘i and the Pacific. Directed by Roderick Labrador, Asian American Studies, UCLA and Ethnic Studies, UHM. The program is open to students from all institutions at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Financial aid is available to qualified UCLA students. All other students should inquire about financial aid at their home institution. For more information, go to this address

“While at the University of Hawaii, Professor Umemoto also served as the Director of Training for the Asian Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center (2000-2010) in the School of Medicine, working to reduce youth violence in Hawaii. She has also worked on a variety of community development projects and assisted nonprofit organizations and government agencies with strategic planning.”

For over forty-five years, the UCLA Asian American Studies Center has been at the forefront of educating the American public about the intellectual, cultural, and political diversity of the Asian American and Pacific Islander experience.

“we must recognize that while the mixing of Asian and Hawaiian cultures is not inherently a bad thing, the conflation of Hawaiian and Asian cultures fosters the idea that Native Hawaiian people and culture are relics of the past, and often causes misrepresentation of Native Hawaiians in mainstream media”

***URGENT - UPDATE***

Special thank you to each of you who helped in promoting the UCLA Hawai’i Travel Study Program! Based on this and after the Department manager convenes with the Department Chair (tomorrow), we plan to recommend to the UCLA International Education Office (UCLA Study Abroad) to give us more time, and that we can fill the class.

We need you more than ever now.
Register and submit the deposit ASAP: (http://ieo.ucla.edu/travelstudy)

Starting the application and submitting a deposit becomes tangible evidence to the UCLA Study Abroad office that students are committed in participating on this trip. So far, only 16 remain confirmed (paid deposits and are holding a spot on the program) and 8 have registered (have not paid and are not yet holding a spot on the program). I believe in this program, and I hope that you choose to commit to this.
