On August 29th, the builder of my ol' 'Jim burst' Studio Elite strat that I bought in 1986 (a USC grad present from my mother), past away. Master luthier James Tyler, was far more than a designer/builder...he was an innovator, artist, icon and enigma. A sometimes surly, (but always with a twinkle in his eye) defiant, genius who was responsible for a lot of the sounds of the 80's guitar bands and TV shows (think Giant, Toto, Landau, Hill Street Blues, Magnum P.I. etc.) and now leading the massive resurgence of said sounds(!). There were so many times that that guitar bailed me out of tight spots, and as you can see from the roaded wear, my 'Jimmy' has been my #1 for 38 years. He built a community of gifted, caring craftspeople around him and my hope is that his magic from that tone factory in the N. Valley will continue in their worthy and dedicated hands. RIP James, a legend passes, but leaves so much for us to appreciate, build on, and remember you by! 🏁👍🏁 Richard Smith

"When you teach, you learn twice!" (Andres Segovia) I had an E P I C time at the USC Thornton Studio Guitar Summer Seminar Summer at USC Guitar Seminar today... Let's see: drop 2 voicings, pentatonic scales, classical, blues, rock, jazz, pop, song writing, metal, ska, lyrical melody playing, bold artistic 'signature' development, 3-octave arpeggios, repertoire, artistic-compass-finding, signal chain, pickups, wammi bar trivia, series parallel switches, single coil pickups, on-board preamp systems...whew, that was a lot to cover in 2 hours! A wonderful room of talented, college bound guitarists from China to New Jersey...

"To be studied thoroughly, the guitar must be studied broadly..." EC Duke Miller., USC 1983.
