Happy National American Sign Language (ASL) Day! 🤟 Today, we celebrate the power of communication and the determination of our students. From mastering new skills in plumbing to creating in culinary classrooms, our ASL students are thriving—supported by dedicated interpreters and an inclusive learning environment that helps turn goals into careers. We caught up with a few of them in during class today:
# 1–3: Alejandro Cabrera, pictured with interpreter Glenn Vigil, is in his 1st semester of Plumbing. 🪠🛠️ Today’s class with Mr. Galvan had him working on equations and technical drawings for a bathroom. Alejandro hopes to one day open his own plumbing company, hiring plumbers from the deaf and hard of hearing community.
# 4–5: Luis Benitez, pictured with interpreter, Marissa Aganon, is in his 2nd semester of Professional Baking. 🧑🏽🍳🧁Today, he was learning proper ingredient measurements from Chef Colin True. Luis also has his certificate in Culinary Arts and hopes to transfer to CSUN to pursue a degree in business. TBD on how that will manifest for Luis career-wise, but we’ll be the 1st in line for his future culinary ambition.✨
# 6–7: Linda Ulteras, pictured with her interpreter Ramon Ramirez, is in her 2nd semester of Professional Baking. 🎂🍰 Today, Linda learned from Chef Stacy Damaso about opera cake, a classic French dessert layering spongecake soaked in coffee syrup, buttercream and chocolate ganache. One day, she’d like to open her own baking business.
