UES is excited to announce its Fall 2021 recruitment cycle! Come out to our info session on Friday, October 1st, at 6 PM PDT to learn more about UCLA’s premier organization for students interested in more than just the pre-professional side of economics.

The Undergraduate Economics Society (UES) is a student-run group dedicated to fostering an interest in Economics as an academic subject to the wider student body and the establishment of closer ties between students and faculty within UCLA’s Economics Department. This year, UES will focus on hosting programs for mentorship from upperclassmen, academic paper and general interest economics book reading cohorts, technical workshops in working with data in R/Python, and opportunities to hone writing skills about economics in the UCLA Econ department newsletter and the Bruin Economics Journal. All students interested in economics are welcome to be a part of UES and become a part of the discussion about the vast and interesting field of economics!

By now many of us are aware that Ben and Jerry’s is more than just a groovy ice cream company, with exciting flavor names. This ice cream store has ridden the wave of Corporate Social Responsibility all the way to the top. In the early 80’s Ben Cohen coined the phrase ‘Caring Capitalism’ and saw it through with his three pronged mission including a product, economic and social mission.

Since 1985, the Ben and Jerry’s Foundation has donated 7.5% of its annual pre-tax profits to community organizations around America. This is roughly 1.8 million dollars annually and doesn’t even begin to include the hundreds of thousands of dollars they've donated to other progressive causes over the years such as racial justice, climate change and peace building.

We can only wonder when other companies will follow the lead of Ben and Jerry’s and join the journey towards ‘Caring Capitalism.’

Just like many other businesses around the world, the businesses in Westwood have been struggling to remain open, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In March, when UCLA students rushed out of Westwood, the shops felt an immediate impact.

According to Andrew Thomas, in August 30% of Westwood was vacant as many businesses, including AT&T, Sur La Table and El Pollo Loco, have closed indefinitely. On the other hand, essential shops such as Ralphs, Target and CVS have not been largely affected but the lack of students, due to their goods having inelastic demand.

With students slowly moving back to Westwood this Fall, maybe these businesses will be able to pick up again, and won’t have to shut down in the long run.

Donut Economics, proposed by Kate Raworth, provides a visual framework which combines planetary boundaries with the concept of social boundaries. The center of the donut depicts the part of society that lacks access to life’s necessities. These people need to overcome the social boundary, while simultaneously not overshooting and crossing over the ecological boundaries, represented by the outer circle of the donut. Economists should be focusing their efforts on keeping the economy within the confines of the two boundaries - or in other words, filling the donut.
