for this week is another brother from Beta Gamma’s Spring 2018 pledge class, Timothy Islam! Timothy will be graduating this Spring 2020 with a B.S. in Neuroscience and a minor in Biomedical Research! As a MARC scholar, Timothy researched stroke and neural repair with Dr. Tom Carmichael, and he has participated in Stanford’s AMGEN Scholars Program. Along with these accomplishments, he prides himself on completing PS4’s Spiderman in less than a day of in-game play and getting the Platinum Trophy for it. His hobbies include playing 13, beating our current MA Jack and friends at UNO, and playing online. He questions whether sleeping is a hobby, but we see it as a necessity! Following graduation, Timothy will be taking multiple gap years to gain more research experience before applying to MD/PhD programs. In doing so, he will be applying to the NIH Postbacc program. In our chapter, Tim has served as our Lounge Manager and Master of Ceremonies. When it comes to AXS shaping his experience, Timothy says, “AXS helped me gain a sense of community and belonging at UCLA. It also pushed me to be more social and step outside of my comfort zone.” For advice to current undergrads, he says, “Take life and studies one day/week at a time. There’s no point in planning your life for more than 2 years in advance. So much can change in that amount of time. Focus on the now and cherish the time you have left in college.” He would like to thank his parents for supporting him through college, the people in AXS that he has shared a laugh with, his big Carlos (), and Dr. Pham (). 👑

Congratulations Timothy! Wishing you lots of laughs and luck for the future! 🎓

for this week is Arissa Santos from Beta Gamma’s Spring 2018 pledge class! Arissa will be graduating this Spring 2020 with a B.A. in Psycholoy! At UCLA, Arissa worked as an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Fanselow’s lab focusing on fear learning paradigms and behavioral neuroscience. She has also been a part of the UCLA Spirit Squad’s Yell Crew and Mascots for three years, serving as captain for her senior year. Arissa has been our chapter’s rush chair and is currently one of our historians for her second term! Her hobbies include watching old films, making music, and taking care of her plant. Following graduation, she will be taking a gap year to work in the film industry after completing an internship at in hopes of becoming a cinematographer. She will also be applying to graduate programs to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology. When it comes to AXS shaping her experience, Arissa says, “AXS gave me some of my most memorable college experiences. I’m very happy to have met some of the people in Beta Gamma. STEM fields have a reputation to be cutthroat and bring out the worst in people, but I’m glad I found a bubble of driven and slightly goofy buddies.” Her advice to current undergrads quotes her favorite director, Agnès Varda, saying “Work more. You are a little bit lazy. Stop saying, ‘I’m going to shoot.’ Just shoot!” She would like to thank her family, team, and friends for getting her to where she is! 🤟

Congratulations Arissa! Good luck! 🎓

for this week is Alex Umanzor from our Fall 2016 pledge class! Alex graduated in Winter 2020 with a B.S. in Chemistry! At UCLA, he was as a joint undergraduate researcher in the labs of Prof. Alexander Spokoyny and Prof. Ken Houk, resulting in his first publication. He has also worked as a teaching assistant for lower division organic chemistry classes. Alex says, “[In] my freshman year at UCLA, I found the STEM classes to be cutthroat and didn’t have many friends in the major. This, combined with the lack of fellow Latinx and/or LGBTQ+ students in my classes, made it difficult for me to feel like I belonged. When I pledged AXS at the beginning of my sophomore year, I immediately gained a wonderfully diverse group of friends, classmates, and mentors. This new support system helped me to navigate academia like nobody else had before, giving me the tools to not only turn my grades around, but also to gain access to some life changing undergraduate research experiences. Over 3 years after joining AXS, I love that I’m now able to pay it forward and provide similar guidance to our younger brothers. For me, AXS has been a group of people I look forward to seeing every day in our lounge— friends to study with, cry with, and celebrate each other’s accomplishments with. This is my favorite thing about AXS—we all have such unique interests and career goals, but we’re all committed to helping each other succeed.” Alex has served as Beta Gamma’s rush chair and Seaborg banquet chair. If he isn’t in the lounge or in lab, he can be found at outdoor malls, discovering new bars & restaurants, or studying at a cafe. Outside of chemistry, he loves learning languages, watching novelas/kdramas, and playing the violin. Alex will be attending the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities for his PhD in Organic/Organometallic Chemistry, focusing on the development of new earth-abundant transition metal-catalyzed methodologies for pharmaceutical and energy applications. He would like to thank his boyfriend, Joseph, for his unconditional love and support for the past 3 years. 👑

Congratulations Alex! We’re so excited for your future at UMN! 🎓 @ University Of Minnesota - Twin Cities

Long time no see! We’ll be highlighting our graduating brothers for the next couple weeks. Our first is Erick Rodriguez Palomares from our Fall 2018 pledge class! Erick will be graduating in Spring 2020 majoring in biochemistry with a minor in Chicano studies. While at UCLA, he joined the Srivastava lab, became a student supervisor at De Neve Dining, and served as Master of Ceremonies and Rush Chair for the Beta Gamma chapter! When it comes to how AXS has shaped his undergraduate experience, Erick says, “AXS gave me a community that I never had at UCLA. I always felt left out in not having a huge group of friends that I could hang out with, and after some personal issues with friends at home, that feeling magnified. But AXS gave me a place on campus I could look forward to being, and friends that I could talk and hang out with, who could relate to my experiences in college.” After graduating, Erick will be taking a gap year to explore graduate school options and more future opportunities! He advises current UCLA undergraduates to focus on their relationships and making friends at UCLA, otherwise they’ll regret it. He would like to thank his girlfriend Patty Morales who has been with him on his entire UCLA career and has always supported him. 💕

Congratulations Erick! We love you and can’t wait to see what the future holds in store for you! 🎓
