2025’s homicide tally marks the city’s lowest total since 1966, when the city’s population was nearly a third smaller. The downturn mirrors precipitous drops in many other large cities nationwide in 2025.

Police officials held a news conference Thursday to tout improvements in the homicide 'clearance rate,' a measure of how often detectives mark murder investigations as closed, saying more killings were solved in a year when crime rates plummeted.
