2025’s homicide tally marks the city’s lowest total since 1966, when the city’s population was nearly a third smaller. The downturn mirrors precipitous drops in many other large cities nationwide in 2025.

Police officials held a news conference Thursday to tout improvements in the homicide 'clearance rate,' a measure of how often detectives mark murder investigations as closed, saying more killings were solved in a year when crime rates plummeted.

National Crime Victims' Rights Week was established in 1981 to bring awareness of the impact that crimes have on victims, honor survivors, and raise awareness about victims' rights and services available. In 2025, Los Angeles experienced the lowest homicide rate since the 1950s. It also saw a decrease in the rate of shootings and deadly car crashes.

The number of shooting victims also declined in the city in 2025.
