Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) is a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian, minority-serving medical and health sciences institution. Located in the Watts-Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles, CDU has graduated more than 550 medical doctors, 2,500 post-graduate physicians, more than 2,000 physician assistants and hundreds of other health professionals. The only dually designated Historically Black Graduate Institution and Hispanic Serving Health Professions School in the U.S., CDU is recognized as a leader in translational and health inequities research, specifically with respect to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, mental health, and HIV/AIDS. Recently, the CDU/UCLA medical program was named the best performer in the University of California System with respect to producing outstanding underrepresented minority physicians by the Greenlining Institute.

The CDU community mourns the passing of legendary civil rights leader Dolores Huerta.

This past February, Dolores inspired the audience at the University’s Annual President’s Breakfast with a stirring call to action. She reminded us of our obligation to fight for justice and stand up for what is right, recognizing the sacrifice, commitment, and courage this work demands. More importantly, she underscored the vital role each of us plays in protecting democracy and urged us to make our voices heard at the ballot box during the midterm elections.

Dolores Huerta left us a blueprint for activism. It is now up to us to carry her work forward with the same courage, commitment, and determination she exemplified.

We’ve got to meet and meet and meet, we’ve got to confer, confer, confer, we’ve got to plan and plan and plan, and we’ve got to act and act and act. This is our mandate right now.

After immigrating to the United States from the Dominican Republic, Saimon Acevedo Ortiz MD ’28 saw firsthand the challenges his family and community faced finding healthcare that understood their language and cultural needs.

Now, he aims to make healthcare more accessible for the communities he serves.

For Saimon Acevedo MD ’28, the path to medicine is personal. After immigrating from the Dominican Republic, he saw firsthand the barriers his family faced finding healthcare providers who understood their language and cultural backgrounds.

Now, he hopes to reduce those barriers and create an environment where patients feel understood and comfortable seeking care.
