Call for Student Participation!
The Department of Homeland Security Centers of Excellence (DHS COE) Summit is organizing several professional development opportunities for students to present their research, engage in hands-on problem-solving, and connect with homeland security internship hosts and employers.
Eligibility: Students affiliated with DHS Centers of Excellence (COE) through research projects, education programs, MSI Summer Research Teams and MSI Scientific Leadership Awards are eligible to participate.
Student Activities:
1. Tabletop Exercise (TTX)
This team-oriented event is intended to engage students in the dynamic process of developing strategies to mitigate and address a series of cascading events as they pertain to a hypothetical pandemic-related supply chain disruption. Participants will be organized into teams by the Summit organizers. Teams will consist of students from across the COEs. The TTX will be held virtually on May 18, 2021.
· TTX Activities include:
o Webinars: A series of content-related webinars will be held prior to the start of the Summit. The webinars will provide background information and scenario context to facilitate student engagement in the TTX. Times and dates are TBD.
o Facilitator-led TTX Session: With the assistance of an appointed facilitator, student teams will be led through a discussion-based scenario exercise. Each team will consider the perspectives of DHS components agencies as they discuss and formulate their team responses to a series of scenario events.
o Report-Out: TTX participants will discuss their participation and provide a brief report-out on their team’s experience during a short panel discussion during the Summit.
2. Student Poster Competition
Students will be selected by their COE Education Representative to submit an abstract, poster and pre-recorded presentation to showcase the students’ research related to a challenge within the Homeland Security Enterprise. Students will present their posters during an assigned poster session on either May 17 or May 18, 2021. Winning poster submissions will be awarded and recognized during the Summit.
· Poster Abstract: Due March 10, 2021
o Abstracts must include project title, author/student name(s), affiliated COE and program, faculty mentor name, and research summary. Maximum 300 words.
· Poster Presentation Tips Webinar: March 26, 2021
o A webinar and resource materials will be provided for students seeking tips and best practices for presenting a poster. The webinar will be held on March 26, 2021, at 1pm. Additional details to follow.
· Draft Poster: Due March 31, 2021
o Posters must follow the Summit template (to be provided by your COE Education Representative)
o Submit your draft poster to your COE’s Representative: Adam Rose, CREATE Director, [email protected]
· Final Poster and Pre-recorded Poster Presentation: Due April 7, 2021
o Maximum of five minutes in length
o Students are encouraged to use Zoom to record their presentations
o Submit your Final Poster submission and recorded presentation to Adam Rose, CREATE Director, [email protected]
3. DHS Workforce Development (WFD) Roundtable and Professional Development Webinars
Human Capital Officers representing DHS components and support contractors will discuss homeland security workforce needs and student career and internship opportunities.
· Roundtable Date/Time:
o The WFD Roundtable will be held during the COE Summit on May 18, 2021.
· WFD Webinars:
o As a lead up to the Roundtable, a series of professional development webinars will be held in conjunction with the PATHWAYS program.
o Topics will include resume preparation, how to navigate USAJobs, and the security clearance process, to name a few.
o Dates, times and links for the webinars will be shared with you by your COE Representative the latter part of March 2021.
