Hello all, it's a been a while. Miss you all so much!
Thank you Sona Hovsepian Sona for your relentless efforts to communicate with UCLA General Alumni Association for the affiliation and establishment of our own Association.Thank you Gabriyel Mamikonyan and those who have been involved in this process. Let's realize this very important goal together.
I truly wish that more of our very dear former student will get involved in this. We have about 5000 students who have taken one or more of Armenian courses we offer at UCLA since the inception of Narekatsi chair 50 years ago, and we don't have an alumni association? That's not right. Remember our Chair is probably the most important Armenian Studies institution outside of Armenia. In January we'll be celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the Narekatsi Chair with the most fabulous way. Thanks to Melkonian Global Overture and its president Arsine Shirvanian. Here is the flyer for one of the celebratory events. Stay tuned and get involved. Please contact Arsine Shirvanian for your availability and willingness to help. (818) 642-7787.
I will soon post the event details on this page as well.

Even if the nightingale is in a gold cage, she still dreams of returning to the forest. (Armenian Proverb)

In the Armenian Mountains
by Hovhannes Toumanian

The way was heavy and the night was dark,
And yet we survived
Both sorrow and gloom.
Through the ages we go and gaze at the stark
Steep heights of our land—
The Armenian Highlands.

We carry from old our treasure,
Vast as the sea,
Brought into life
By the great soul of our people,
In our lofty land—
The Armenian Highlands.

How many times
The savage hordes
From the blazing desert
Tore and tormented
Our caravan
In our blood-smeared land—
The Armenian Highlands.

Yet, plundered and scattered,
Our caravan
Sought its way out
From among the rocks
Counting the scars of its countless wounds
In our mournful land—
The Armenian Highlands.
And we gaze with dolorous, longing eyes
At the earth in its gloom,
At the distant stars;
Ah, when will the dawn break at last
Over our green
Armenian Highlands?
