The Baja SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) team of California State University Los Angeles is a group of students who build an off-road race car for the annual Baja SAE Competition. The event consists of over 100 teams representing domestic and international universities. The purpose of the Baja SAE competition is to simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges.

These include design, planning, and manufacturing tasks found when introducing a new product to the consumer industrial market. Students must not only function as a team to design, build, test, promote, and race a vehicle within the limits of the established rules, but also to have their design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm. For a more challenging test, every team is required to use identical engines. The teams are judged based on established parameters of safety, cost, design, and innovation. In addition, the team participates in several driving events to prove the design concept in competition. These events include acceleration, hill climb, rock crawl, and a four hour endurance event.
