CSUN AIS is the second oldest Ethnic Studies academic unit (after both Chicana/o Studies & Africana Studies that were established in 1969). AAS was founded in 1990 and Central American & Transborder Studies founded in 2000. From a 2006 CSUN *Sundial* article, after going back and forth about the first Powwow being 1974 or 1976, this article confirms the First Powwow was 1976.

CSUN's first Powwow was held April 9, 1976. Then, due to lack of participation and funding, in 1998, the CSUN Powwow took a hiatus until it was revived in 2005. The CSUN Powwow was held in many different locations at different times of the year, but it seems we have settled the location at the Sierra Quad on the Saturday after Thankstaking/Thanksgiving (until further notice). . . . CSUN's 41st Powwow will be on Saturday, November 28th, 2026. . . Our headstaff is almost complete! We'll be updating our flyers soon! (Mark your calendars!)
Here's a little AISA tidbit: before establishing itself as AISA in 1974, the student organization was first known as the Foundation for American Indian Right in 1969, then United Native Americans in 1971.
The American Indian Student Association at CSUN honored Indigenous Awareness Month by having a pow wow during Veteran's Day weekend, about two weeks after Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante announced that November will now be recognized as American Indian Heritage Month in California.
