This week we’re focusing on upcycling, starting with seasoning containers! After serving their initial purpose they can be refilled with seasoning, dry shampoo, or serve as the perfect home for plant propagation.
🌱
Clean your seasoning container and fill it with water. Add your plant cutting and place it in moderate to indirect light. Replace the water every few days and watch for root growth. When roots reach about 1 inch plant your cutting in soil and enjoy your new houseplant! Some herbs, including basil and mint, can even grow in water full time!

Looking to grocery shop more sustainably? We’ve got some tips!
🍎
Check out your local Farmer’s Market! The Westwood Village Farmer’s Market is open every Thursday 12-5. You’ll be supporting local farmers, limiting carbon emissions by buying local, and reducing waste.
🍎
If shopping at a grocery store, load groceries straight into your cart and skip the bags at checkout. You can load your items into your own bags outside or at your car. If you (understandably) can’t avoid plastic or paper bags get creative with them. Plastic bags can pick up pet waste or line trash bins. Paper bags can collect compost or be used as gift wrap.
🍎
Do your best to upcycle recyclables like glass jars. Many recycling centers around Los Angeles have been operating in a limited capacity for the past few weeks. As they slowly start to increase intake, it’s exceedingly important to thoroughly clean recyclables.

Happy day 3 of Waste Awareness Week! Today’s focus is “Food Waste” and we’re helping you to compost.
🍌
If you don’t have room for a compost pile you can try a rotating compost bin, vermi compost, or a freezer compost. You can find drop offs on campus, at farmer’s markets, Whole Foods, community gardens, and more.
🍌
Be sure to check out Renewable Energy Association at UCLA, Environmental Student Network, and UCLA SWC EARTH for more resources!
