Happy last week of classes everyone! This semester’s final Friday Feature is Keyanna Daniels!⁣

She is a senior majoring in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention and double minoring in Screenwriting and Natural Sciences. She currently serves on our executive board as the 2019-2020 Historian/Webmaster. On campus, she is the Co-Director of the Keck Student Ambassadors, Recruitment Chair of Scholars Leading Scholars, VP of Minority Association of Pre-medical Students, and a Resident Advisor. She does research for USC Train Your Brain which helps treat PTSD through neurofeedback interventions and volunteered at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital through UCLA Care Extenders.⁣

Upon graduation, she plans on taking two gap years before attending medical school. She hopes to work either in public health policy or in health writing.⁣

Keyanna joined AED as a full member in Fall 2018 and her favorite memory has been “taking pictures of all of E-board for the website. I'm not an experienced photographer at all, so just getting to joke around, make people laugh, and take photos from the craziest angles was hilarious. The moments I got on camera were so goofy, genuine, and fun which is exactly what our E-board was. (*hint* *hint* go check out our website)!” ⁣

Finally, Keyanna’s best advice for AED pre-medical students is to “explore as many other interests as you can while at USC. Take a film class, add a minor, learn how to make sculptures, just do anything that's new, exciting, and could bring you joy. Being pre-med is a hard path and figuring out who you are and what you like outside of your goal of being a doctor is so important. So do it now while you're young!”⁣

Fight on, Keyanna! ✌️

This week’s Friday Feature is Tyler Gallagher!⁣

He is a senior double-majoring in Biological Sciences and Political Science and is a member of our general body. He volunteers at the Orthopaedic Institute for Children, does research in the Jakowec Lab at HSC, works as a Program Coordinator of Intramural Sports at USC and works as a writer for a LA Chargers website (Bolt Beat). On campus, he is the Co-President of Green Ribbon Club, Treasurer of Flying Samaritans, and a member of USC’s Science Policy Group.⁣

A huge congrats to Tyler for committing to USC Keck School of Medicine! He chose Keck “both for its location, and the excellent opportunity for clinical experience with the sickest and most underprivileged patients at LAC + USC.”⁣

Tyler joined AED as a full member in Fall 2017 and his favorite memory from joining was “the challenging but fun experience from MMI-like interviews, and it was the first of many bonding experiences with fellow pre-meds.”⁣

Here is Tyler’s best advice for AED pre-medical students: “If you are a pre-med, you probably feel challenged to do the typical “pre-med” things like volunteering, research, and shadowing. While you need a bit of each of these experiences, don’t stop following your passions, whether they are medically related or not. Medical schools want you to have those experiences, but it is more important that you show that you are a passionate person and have the drive to make it through medical school and pursue your goals!”⁣

Fight on, Tyler! ✌️

This week’s Friday Feature is Nikki Jamshidbaigi!⁣

She is a senior majoring in global health and is a member of our general body. On campus, she is an Outreach Coordinator for USC Camp Kesem, a research intern at Kaspect Reach, a TEDXUSC Speaker, and is involved in LavaLab. She also volunteers at CHLA.⁣

Nikki joined AED as a full member in Spring 2018 and her favorite part has been “meeting all my new member class friends; we really bonded through that semester. It’s so great running into them on campus or at social events!”⁣

Nikki’s best advice to AED pre-medical students is to “pursue things that you have an interest in! I always felt like I was following a path that wasn't traditional but I wanted to pursue everything that I was ever curious about. You don't necessarily have to relate everything in your life to medicine. Involving yourself in different things can actually give you a more well rounded perspective that's really valuable as a health professional.”⁣

Fight on, Nikki! ✌️

This week’s Friday Feature is Miguel Jaime!⁣

He is a senior majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a Mechanical emphasis. He serves on our executive board as a 2019-2020 Associates Chair. On campus, Miguel is involved in Association for Clinical Education, Latino Students in Medicine, does neuroimaging research at Keck, and is an SI Leader for MATH 126.⁣

Miguel joined AED as a full member in Fall 2017 and his favorite part has been “Spring 2019 Invite! I loved going with my littles (shoutout to Olivia and Michael), and my close friends Adam and Adrie. It was a great way to celebrate and send off the seniors who I was really close with that year :)”⁣

Miguel’s best advice to AED pre-medical students is “to not be afraid to take time off before medical school to explore career or personal interests, whether or not they are related to medicine. Once you are in medical school, your personal time is more limited, so take the time off while you have it! Also, make an effort to get to know people from AED because they can end up being some of your closest friends and mentors! Pre-med is no easy path, so never feel bad about reaching out to others for help.”⁣

Fight on, Miguel! ✌️

This week’s Friday Feature is Ana Paola Mata!⁣

She is a senior majoring in global health and double-minoring in photography and social change and natural science. She serves on our executive board as a 2019-2020 Social Chair. On campus, Ana is involved in Ronald McDonald House at USC, Latino Students in Medicine, and does research in the USC Institute on Inequalities in Global Health on empowerment in photo voice studies. She also volunteers at 826LA tutoring high school students and at Borderland Midwives, a maternal clinic in Tijuana, Mexico. ⁣

Ana joined AED as a full member in Fall 2018 and her favorite part has been “planning invite! I care so much for the people I've met in AED that I loved seeing them have a great time at our biggest social. S/o to my co-chair Clarissa!”⁣

Ana’s best advice to AED pre-medical students is “don't compare yourself to others. Everyone has different interests and takes distinct paths to reach their goals. Your only competition is with yourself. Focus on you and how you can improve everyday! The health field is rich in diversity, so find your unique way to contribute to it :) Also make sure to celebrate your achievements! The pre-med journey can be tough, so make sure to acknowledge all the hard work you put into it.“⁣

Fight on, Ana! ✌️

We have just over one month until the end of the semester, so we want to spotlight some of our awesome seniors who will be graduating soon!

This weeks’s Friday Feature is Matt Zabat!

He is a senior majoring in biological sciences and serves on our executive board as a 2019-2020 New Member Coordinator. On campus, he is involved in the Trojan Youth Soccer League, the IHC Mentorship Program, and volunteers at Keck.

Matt joined AED as a full member in Spring 2018 and his favorite part about joining AED has been “serving on E-Board as a New Member Coordinator. I've made some of my best friends through E-Board that I know I will be in touch with long after graduation. As a NMC, I've been able to pass along the information and experience I've amassed through my time in college to our new members and form friendships with people that I probably never would've interacted with otherwise.”

Matt’s best advice to AED pre-medical students is to “take time for yourself and ask for advice/help when you need it. Being pre-med is hard, but it is so much better when you are taking care of yourself. Whether it's taking a weekend off from studying to relax or joining a completely unrelated student org that you are interested in, it is so important to take a break from the craziness of the pre-med curriculum. Also, use the resources you have available as a USC student/AED member. Talk to your advisors, ask upperclassmen about your schedule, call your parents. No one knows everything and there is absolutely no shame in admitting when you don’t.”

Fight on, Matt! ✌️ @ University of Southern California

We are bringing back our Friday Features for the spring semester, starting off with Nausheen Wakhlu!⁣

She is a senior majoring in psychology and minoring in Spanish and currently serves on our executive board as the 2019-2020 Secretary. On campus, she is an undergraduate research fellow at the Health, Emotion, and Addiction Laboratory, a Kicks for Kids volunteer, member of vegan club, and a self-nominated F45 campus ambassador :)⁣

Nausheen joined AED as a full member in Spring 2018 and her favorite memory was “walking into O-chem lecture after my first new member meeting and realizing that I suddenly knew so many more people than the week before! AED has introduced me to some of the most fun and hardworking pre-meds and I am so grateful I made the impulse decision to apply sophomore year. Being on E-board has also been so fun and I have made some of my best friends through it.”⁣

Nausheen’s best advice for our underclassmen AED members is that “these will be some of the best four years of your life!! Work hard but make the best of your time at USC. Find a creative outlet and do things and take classes that force you to step outside your comfort zone. Spend time with your friends, read books in the grassy area behind Taper, pet Beau at his office hours, go to campus improv shows, and of course, come to AED socials :)”⁣

Fight on, Nausheen! ✌️
