May Grand Rounds featured engaging discussions on diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation medicine, immunotherapy advancements, and pediatric sleep disorders.

We began the month with the 26th Annual Doctor Lawrence A. Davis Memorial Lectureship, where Dr. Vesna M. Kriss explored imaging of pediatric abdominal pain and the power of ultrasound. Later in the month, Dr. Catherine Schuster presented Baclofen Pump Basics for the Non-Physiatrist, providing valuable insight into rehabilitation care for pediatric patients. We also welcomed Dr. Shakeel Modak for the 24th Annual Evan Dunbar Lectureship, where he discussed immunotherapy for neuroblastoma: current status and future directions and the evolving landscape of pediatric cancer treatment. The month concluded with Dr. Egambaram Senthilvel sharing expertise on restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder in pediatric sleep medicine.

Congratulations to Christie L. Buonpane, MD, Pediatric General Surgery, on being asked to serve on the Scientific Advisory Council for the NEC Society — the world’s leading nonprofit dedicated to understanding and preventing necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC).

The NEC Society brings together patient-families, clinicians and researchers who share a vision of building a world without NEC through research, education and advocacy so that babies and families never have to experience the devastation of NEC.

More proof that our Pulmonology Division is leading the way in the future of caring for children with complex and rare lung diseases.

Our faculty and fellows played a key role in shaping the conversations at this year's American Thoracic Society Conference.

Dr. Erica Stevens delivered a lecture on neonatal lung disease at the Pediatric Resident Boot Camp, joined a panel on pediatric pulmonary fellowship training, led a debate on the potential transition to 2‑year fellowship programs, and coordinated the University of Louisville School of Medicine poster presentation sponsored by PEPTDA to highlight individual pediatric pulmonology fellowship programs.

Dr. Scott Bickel presented in the pediatric pulmonology board review series on lung disease associated with autoimmune disorders and sickle cell disease.

Graduating fellow and future faculty member Dr. Rose Hawkins presented an abstract and poster featuring a unique case of recurrent laryngospasm in an infant.

First‑year fellow Dr. Ranya Baddourah presented a case report on the management of a teenager with cystic fibrosis who carries extremely rare mutations.

Simulations are a key part of learning to become a pediatrician no matter where you do your training, but only University of Louisville School of Medicine and Norton Children's are there Derby themed simulation competitions!

Last week our Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship program invited fellows from the University of Dayton, Riley Children's Foundation and UAB Medicine to join our Fellows for our annual Simulation Derby. They participated in a variety of competition including an escape room, trivia and timed procedures and cases.

Our Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty and third year fellows served as judges.

APPD LEAD is a nationally recognized leadership development program designed for pediatric educators aspiring to grow as leaders in academic medicine and medical education. Over the course of nine months, participants engage with experienced program directors, educators and national pediatric leaders while developing skills in organizational leadership, competency-based curriculum development, faculty development, program administration and scholarship.

Congratulations to Dr. Allie Lyle on being selected to serve as co-chair of the Academic Pediatric Association Ethics Special Interest Group (SIG)! 👏

The APA Ethics SIG brings together pediatricians and pediatric experts dedicated to advancing the integration of ethics into clinical care, research, advocacy and medical education. Through initiatives including ethics programming at the Pediatric Academic Societies meeting and mentorship opportunities for trainees, the group plays an important role in shaping thoughtful, compassionate pediatric practice.
