On September 17 from 4 -6 p.m., the University of Louisville Archives & Special Collections opens A Change is Gonna Come: Institutional Memories of a Campus in Transition.

Developed in partnership with Dr. Felicia Jamison and fourteen History 310 students, the exhibit explores the efforts undertaken by UofL to recognize and respond to the needs of Black staff, faculty, students, and community members between 1967 and 1977. The exhibit coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of the university's Office of Minority Affairs, whose papers are now available to the public for research. The students' curatorial work reveals how preserving and engaging with the breadth of the university’s history can support the envisioning of the campus of tomorrow.

The Mentored Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities Award gives A&S students the opportunity to collaborate with a mentor on hands-on research or creative projects while building meaningful experience in an area that interests them.

💰 Teams can receive up to $1,500 in funding
📅 Opportunities available for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027
⏰ Apply by October 15, 2026

Priority is given to first- and second-year students, so this is a great opportunity to get involved in research and creative work early in your college experience.

The Sociology Graduate Student Association and Department of Sociology have organized a donation drive for the residents of Gary, Indiana, after storms affected the area last month. The most needed items include shelf-stable food, hygiene products, baby formula, and diapers, but all donations are welcomed.

Items can be dropped off in the Department of Sociology (located in Lutz Hall on the southeast side of campus) between 9:30 AM - 5:00 PM between September 8-11.

We are proud of our faculty who continue to serve as scientific reviewers for federally-funded research.

Dr. Debbie Potter was selected to review 19 proposals to three programs funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA): the Statewide Family Network (SFN), Mental Health Awareness Training (MHAT), and the National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative (NCTSI) Community Treatment and Service Centers.

Dr. Cotton Seiler, Professor of American Studies at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, will deliver a lecture entitled, “Race, Infrastructure, and the Future,” exploring how theories of race and human evolution have shaped public infrastructure in the United States.

Focusing on the New Deal and the era of desegregation following Brown v. Board of Education, Seiler examines how ideas about different populations influenced access to sanitation, education, energy, recreation, transportation, and other essential services.

His interdisciplinary work spans U.S. cultural and intellectual history, race, feminist and political theory, and infrastructure humanities. He is author of the new book, White Care: The Impact of Race on American Infrastructure (Chicago, 2026). Wednesday, September 30, at 4:00 p.m. in SRB 139.
