Congratulations Jaci Cazarra! Jaci completed the University of Louisville MA Higher Education Administration (MAHEA) degree and graduates May 13, 2023. Read about her experience in to the program today!

Why UofL's MAHEA degree?
"I've worked in higher ed for over twenty years. I'd started a program at Northwestern University ages ago, but life and the cost got in the way. Having spent my whole at private, selective universities, I wanted to learn more about institutions and develop the theoretical foundations that I hadn't gained thru experience alone. I selected the MAHEA program at Louisville because it was , is focused on and , I'd have the opportunity to do , the student and faculty populations are in so many ways, and it was naturally oriented around a public university ."

What did you enjoy the most about the program?
"I loved my capstone project experience. I had an amazing opportunity to work with Harvard College on a project in an area pretty far outside my comfort zone. It expanded my professional network and I learned that many of the academic and professional skills I've developed in the program and in my career serve me well outside my tiny niche in higher ed. I learned to see myself as not only a good registrar, but a higher ed expert with additional skills to offer my current and prospective employers, as well as broader academic interests."

Do you feel the program provided you with the skills to advance in your career?
"Absolutely. Having worked in this field for a while, I wanted to undergird and refine my experience with research and the skills to continue that practice. I did acquire those , and I'm excited to use them to investigate ideas that can help me, my teams, my university, and ultimately students and faculty!"

Would you recommend the program?
"Yes! My advisor, faculty, and fellow students were great. The online, mostly asynchronous and short course format meant that I could continue my high-demand job and still be present for my family while investing in myself and my learning. I was hoping to build a theoretical foundation, which I did, but I also benefited from the aspects of the program. I just learned so much, and I had a time doing it. I'm inspired to continue my studies after my experience in this program."

Congratulations Jaci! Welcome to the Cardinal Alumni Family!

Congratulations Dr. Casey George for her exceptional research product, mentorship and dialogue with the U.S. .

Dr. George is the principal investigator on a $65,000 grant with the U.S. Army in collaboration with the U.S. Army Cadet Commanding Research Fellows. The study investigated how Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) interact and engage with parents, guardians, and other key adult figures who in turn influence a college student’s decision to participate in the program. It also examined potential marketing strategies and support systems that could be utilized to strengthen recruiting efforts.

During the project, Dr. George provided training to the four fellows conducting in literature reviews, designing research, collecting and analyzing data and writing to execute the study. Most importantly, the project emphasized connecting research to practice, while providing graduate students with hands-on research experiences.

On March 27, Dr. George presented her work to the Commanding General, the Deputy Commanding General and a team of Colonels at the United States Army Cadet Command which oversees ROTC. Impressed with her findings, they invited Dr. George to present the project’s recommendations to the Brigade leadership team and all 274 Professors of Military Science, who lead ROTC programs located across the country. Her follow-up presentations will be held this spring.

Did you know April is the the Month of the ?
Per the Department of Defense (DOD), military families every two to three years on average, and military children an average of to times from the start of kindergarten to their high school graduation. This year an estimated 30 percent of military service members will move to a new installation.

The DOD is committed to recognizing the unique challenges of military-connected children, youth and teens and ensuring that families are aware of the full breadth of support and resources that are at the ready to serve their needs as they change schools, settle into new communities, and navigate military life in general.

"This April, we honor the 1,602,261 military children, youth and teens serving alongside our nation's service members," said Patricia Montes Barron, deputy assistant secretary of defense for Military Community and Family Policy. "Our military kids bring joy to our hearts, and we work hard to ensure they have access to the support and resources they need."
