For Dr. Shawn D. Wright, Church History teaches Christians humility. He reminds students that faithful believers throughout the centuries have wrestled carefully with Scripture, theology, and the Christian life, and that we still have much to learn from them today.

In the classroom, Dr. Wright helps students think historically so they can better understand theology, recognize cultural blinders, and grow in wisdom for ministry in the present. His teaching encourages students to engage the past carefully and thoughtfully as they serve the church today.

Last week, PhD students from across the country gathered on campus for seminars, fellowship, chapel, and time with faculty mentors.

Many of these students are faithfully serving in churches while pursuing doctoral study, bringing questions from ministry into the classroom and carrying what they learn back to the church.

One of the strengths of doctoral education at Southern Seminary is the community formed along the way. New cohorts learn alongside returning students, friendships are strengthened, and faculty invest deeply in the lives and work of these men and women.

We are grateful for another week spent sharpening minds and serving the church together.

Psalms 1–72 of The Pillar Old Testament Commentary by Dr. Duane A. Garrett is available now!

"The Psalter gives us the vocabulary for prayer, confession, and praise. It instructs us and, when facing doubts about whether we can maintain faith in God, it encourages us. Novel and elaborate models for interpreting the Psalter confine and diminish it more than they open it up. The book of Psalms is just what it seems to be: a collection of prayers and songs that guide believers in a lifelong walk with God."

In this distinctive commentary, Duane A. Garrett frames the Psalter as an anthology of hymns, prayers, and lessons meant to guide believers in their pilgrimage of faith. He provides thoughtful explanations of themes and motifs that many modern readers find perplexing: the book’s preoccupation with enemies, reliance on repetition, possible messianic references, and more. He illuminates important connections between Psalms and Christian theology. Most importantly, he helps readers understand how Psalms can inform and enrich their own spiritual life.

For Dr. Colin R. McCulloch, theology is meant to shape the way people live. He teaches students that biblical counseling is practical theology, bringing the truth of Scripture to bear on real human struggles, questions, and growth.

In the classroom, Dr. McCulloch helps students move from careful exegesis to faithful application, equipping them to minister personally and thoughtfully to others. His goal is to prepare ministers who can apply God’s Word in ways that strengthen the church and form disciples.

Then and now at Alumni Chapel.

⛪ Completed in 1950 Alumni Chapel was funded through a major campaign with alumni helping raise the $500,000 needed for construction.

🌳 The design was influenced by First Baptist Church of Atlanta, where President Ellis A. Fuller had previously served as pastor. The seminary worked with the firm associated with landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted during the planning and construction process.

🪨 The cornerstone of the chapel contains a copy of the Abstract of Principles along with photographs of the signatures of every Southern Seminary professor who had signed it at the time.

The view has changed over the years, but Alumni Chapel remains at the heart of life at Southern Seminary.

Wondering which electives will prepare you to care for people well in ministry?

We asked Dr. Jeremy Pierre, Lawrence and Charlotte Hoover Professor of Biblical Counseling and Practical Theology, which electives best equip pastors to walk with their people through real struggles, and why those tools matter in every day life.

Who should we ask next?

For Dr. William F. Cook III, studying the New Testament means studying the very Word of God. He teaches students to understand the life and teaching of Jesus, to think biblically about the Christian life, and to serve the church faithfully through Scripture.

In the classroom, Dr. Cook aims to shape both mind and heart, helping students grow in their love for Christ and their readiness for ministry. His teaching emphasizes that theological study is not confined to the classroom, but should shape everyday faithfulness in the home, the church, and every area of life.

Get to know Dr. Cook, whose work forms students to love Jesus deeply, serve him faithfully, and share him intentionally.

This week, Southern Seminary officially welcomed 20 new PhD students during the PhD Induction Ceremony.

Faculty members encouraged the incoming cohort as each student signed the New Student Charge and was pinned in recognition of their entrance into the program. Dr. Eric C. Smith encouraged students to pursue their PhD studies with humility and joy, seeking faithfulness over prestige.

We are thankful for the men and women God continues to call to serious theological study and ministry preparation.
