The 2026 Southern Regional Honors Council conference in Montgomery, Alabama, centered on the theme “Inspired by History,” where Bellarmine Honors students delivered stellar presentations of their senior theses and learned in details about the Civil Rights movement.

The students engaged deeply with the city’s legacy through visits to places such as the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum, National memorial for Peace and Justice, and Freedom Monument Sculpture Park, and the Rosa Parks Museum. The conference included a keynote by Dr. Anthony Ray Hinton, author and activist who spent nearly 30 years on Alabama’s death row for a 1985 double murder he did not commit and was exonerated in 2015 with help from the Equal Justice Initiative.

The trip also fostered a strong sense of community, balancing these intense experiences with shared moments of levity, including van karaoke, group dinners downtown, and pizza by the poolside.

Overall, it was a great experience!

Last Thursday, Students had the opportunity to learn about wildlife rehabilitation and conservation during our Women in Science Lecture with Brigette Brouillard, founder and executive director of Second Chances Wildlife Center.

Brigette shared about the center’s work rescuing and rehabilitating injured wildlife and brought along two rescued animals from the center, Rudy the skunk and Ozzy the bat, for students to see up close!

Thank you to Brigette for visiting Bellarmine University and for such an engaging and informative talk!
