University of Louisville Debate Team

University of Louisville Debate Team The University of Louisville Debate program engages in competitive intercollegiate policy debate.

What separates the U of L Malcolm X Debate Team from many of the teams they compete against is that U of L debaters not only try to construct the convincing arguments, they also put into practice the team’s mission to use debate to teach effective decision making in a multicultural society. U of L debaters look through the lenses of race, gender, sexual orientation, and economics to speak to the d

epth of the implications of the topic under debate. For the debaters, participation in U of L debate is an opportunity to engage in social justice and political activism as well as compete against some of the best collegiate debate programs in the country including Harvard, Dartmouth, Northwestern and others. Thus, the goals for the season include advancing into the late rounds at Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) Tournament and the National Debate Tournament (NDT) and become more able to affect social and political change.

As former policy debater Kent Colbert once noted, “it is doubtful that many other activities can boast of so many successful alumni”. Policy debate alumni includes everyone from presidents to prime ministers, from congressional leaders to community leaders. BUT...the norms and procedures of the activity have created an elitist environment that has the effect of excluding all but a select few students--typically male, white, and coming from a wealthy background.
Please support the Malcolm X Debate program as we continue to change the face of policy debate! Give whatever amount feels meaningful to you, but even a small gift is appreciated--$10 can go a long way! Simply follow the link below, then select College of Arts & Sciences, then Malcolm X Debate.
