🌍 When Lin Wu found UofL’s Geography program, they discovered what they call “UofL’s best kept secret.”

A Geography major with minors in Sustainability and Public Health, Lin is passionate about community-engaged research, environmental justice, and using GIS to make cities more equitable.

They’re also the Honors Student Council VP of Outreach and a Lead Cardinal Guide in Admissions — all while helping advance NSF-funded research on nature-based solutions in Louisville and across the U.S.

Check out this latest feature on DGES student Katherine Drechsel, an Applied Geography major on the meteorology track who put her passion for meteorology into action as part of the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP), building a mobile weather cart with the help of her mentor Dr. Scott Gunter!

From storm chaser at heart to hands-on researcher! 🌩️🔧

Applied Geography major on the meteorology track Katherine Drechsel turned her fascination with weather into real-world skills this summer through the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP).

Under the mentorship of Assistant Professor Scott Gunter, she built a mobile weather cart from the ground up—collecting heat data that will help to shape Louisville’s new LOUMED Commons park.

Her experience shows how UofL students don’t just learn the science—they do the science. ⚡

From soldering pipes to running fieldwork, Katherine gained the kind of career-ready skills that set her apart in meteorology and beyond.

Areas of expertise may include, but are not limited to hydrogeology, environmental geology, soil and rock mechanics, groundwater contamination, geohazards, or applied geological analysis in support of environmental systems.
