A landmark achievement for the future of medicine: the School of Medicine’s MD-PhD program has officially been designated a Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) by the National Institutes of Health.

As one of just 58 MSTP programs nationwide — and the first institution in Kentucky to receive this prestigious designation — UofL is preparing the next generation of physician-scientists to bridge the gap between discovery and patient care.

Because the future of medicine isn't just about treating today's challenges. It's about asking the questions that will lead to tomorrow's breakthroughs.

Louisville’s legacy of cardiovascular innovation meets the future of the field this September. From Sept. 10–12, the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences-North American Section (IACS-NAS) will welcome global cardiovascular leaders to the Galt House for 22 scientific sessions, an NIH symposium, research awards, CME opportunities and more.

The conference marks a particularly meaningful year for UofL, which is celebrating 25 years since a surgical team placed the world’s first fully implantable total artificial heart in a patient at Jewish Hospital.

Researchers interested in presenting should submit abstracts by 1 p.m. EST tomorrow, August 25. UofL and UofL Health employees receive 60% off registration with code UofL600; registration closes Sept. 1.

Medical school comes with plenty of big expenses — and sometimes, it’s the smaller ones that catch students off guard. A group of UofL medical students noticed that professional attire for interviews, presentations and other milestones could be one more financial hurdle for their peers, so they created the Cardinal Closet, a free professional attire resource for medical students.

A seat at the kitchen table can be a classroom, too.

UofL medical students joined an oncologist, surgeon, scientist and registered dieticians in the Trager Institute Culinary Medicine Teaching Kitchen to explore the role of nutrition in cancer care, and how food can provide connection, comfort and a sense of normalcy.

The experience, made possible in part through the Gibbs Foundation’s support of pancreatic cancer research and education, is helping prepare future physicians to care for the whole patient.

Medical students Grace Hong and fellow student Temi Haastrup, mentored by Dwayne Compton, senior associate dean for community engagement, are partnering with West Louisville residents to create "Soul in the West End" a community cookbook celebrating food, culture and the stories behind the recipes. The project is a reminder that improving health isn't just about what happens in the clinic; it starts at the table, through community partnership and solutions that fit people's everyday lives. This summer, Tia Dowling traveled to Malawi expecting to grow as a researcher. What she discovered was something even more meaningful: medicine begins by understanding the communities we serve.

Whether mentoring future scientists during Girls' Science Day, learning alongside healthcare professionals or witnessing extraordinary compassion in a resource-limited setting, Tia returned with a renewed appreciation that every patient is part of a larger story shaped by their family, culture and community.

As she begins her second year of medical school, she's carrying forward a lesson that will shape every patient she cares for: great medicine starts by meeting people where they are.
