Shades Shades exists to provide a network of UofL’s LGBT students of color and allies for the purposes of supporting the welfare of LGBT students of color

Dedicated to empowering LGBT students of color, Shades exists to provide a support network for University of Louisville’s LGBT students of color. The primary purposes are to provide support, promote the welfare of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBT) and Same Gender Loving (SGL) students of color and promote inclusivity through social justice, advocacy and building coalitions with

the University of Louisville community as well as the surrounding community. When Dr. Martin Luther King said, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," he was explaining the way different expressions of prejudice tend to intersect. Students who live at the intersection of race and sexuality often find themselves battling more than one "ism" and the struggle can be difficult, to say the least. We are a group that recognizes and supports diversity and intersectionality, especially those of gender, sexuality, and race. We welcome all students of color who identify as LGBT and want to help create safe spaces to join our group. Meetings are a mix of informal gatherings, Shades formal planning meetings, (for those who choose to participate) larger campus events that bring attention to the experience of LGBT people of color and community service events.
