Bridwell Art Library recently added the 700th title to our Artists' Book collection:
Deux cent soixante-quatorze personnages
by Marc-Antoine K Phaneuf
2026
Québec
Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, 2026

From the publisher- " An artist's book combining literature and graphic design, Two Hundred and Seventy-Four Characters is a collection of ordinary people. Of minimal poetry -- the meeting of a first and a last name -- this chaotic inventory brings together improbable figures, invented or real, crossed by the author or borrowed from popular culture. Each page unfolds a beginning and a fall, giving rise to a play on words or sounds, a lively encounter between heterogeneous cultural elements. Modest yet imposing, Two Hundred and Seventy-Four Characters is a singular object, a book of rare workmanship, entirely gilded -- pages, edges, cover, spine. By its assumed materiality, the object makes you want to be held in the hand, leafed through and preserved, like the most solemn of breviaries."
