Riley Ferretti, who graduated from the UofL School of Music in 2022 with a BM in Music Composition, is now creating music with light. She has invented her own instrument that senses brightness and turns it into music. To describe the instrument, Riley says: “it starts with photoresistor cables that sense brightness. These cables go into an Arduino, which transforms the photoresistor cable data into data that can go into a computer. I then turn this data on my computer into music! “
Her experience in the music composition program deepened her understanding of what music can be. She states that the electronic (music) classes she took at UofL became the foundation for exploring electronic music.

Our annual UofL Piano Festival and Elizabeth Huang Piano Competition has been moved from November 2026 to July 2027 to better accommodate the growth of the festival. This expanded summer festival will feature masterclasses, individual lessons, a piano competition, lectures, a faculty recital and performance opportunities for students. We are excited to welcome pianists to our campus next summer for an exciting opportunity to perform and learn more about the piano. Please keep an eye on our website and social media for more updates as the date approaches.

The University of Louisville Music Therapy Program is pleased to welcome alumna Mackenzie Leighty, MS, MT-BC, as the instructor for Practicum I this semester.
Mackenzie graduated summa cm laude from UofL with a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy and earned her Master of Science in Learning Analytics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her clinical work focuses on supporting children and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities through individualized, music-based interventions. Her interests include early intervention, sensory integration, holistic child development, and the use of data to address educational gaps.
We are delighted to welcome Mackenzie back to UofL and look forward to the valuable clinical and academic expertise she will bring to our students.

Our voice faculty are fantastic teachers and performers. Join Chad Sloan, baritone, along with David George, piano, and Ahmed Alom, piano for a concert on September 13 at 3 p.m. in Comstock Hall. The event will feature music of Mozart, Debussy, Korngold and Rouse. You will also experience the world premiere of The Song of Silas. This work is composed by Louisville Orchestra Music Director Teddy Abrams with the poetry of NY Times best-selling author Silas House.
