The competition has 4 parts; a design paper, final product, oral presentation, and 5 races. Concrete Canoe is a Civil Engineering club that allows students to take part in a 9 month long engineering project culminating in the New England Regional Concrete Canoe Competition each spring. The project is structured around three disciplines: hull design and structural analysis, mix development and test
ing, and construction. A design paper is written by the team showing all the aspects of the project, and describes each phase of the project including project management, a design drawing, project schedule, budget reports, along with references. Also a 5-minute presentation is prepared for the competition, where the presenters are subject to a 5-7 minute Q&A from the judges following the presentation at the competition. Finally the canoeโs performance is tested by a series of races at the competition. This project does not focus on just one aspect of learning but it connects educational thought process to a hands-on approach. The project is a multitask project that takes mental strength, hands on precision and physical endurance to be among the top contenders.
