TTU Department of Industrial, Manufacturing, & Systems Engineering

TTU Department of Industrial, Manufacturing, & Systems Engineering The design & operation of production & service systems & the people who operate in these systems. degrees.

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems engineering studies
the design and operation of production and service systems
and the people who operate in these systems. Industrial engineers use the information and techniques
from physical, mathematical, biological, behavioral, and
engineering sciences to plan, control, design, and manage
complex organizations and systems. Industrial,
Manufacturing & Sys

tems engineering applies the laws of
the physical sciences to designing and operating systems in
which products are produced and services are provided, as
well as to considering the behavior of people as they
operate in these systems. The curriculum provides students with an opportunity to
apply their engineering, mathematical, and science
knowledge to design systems (production or processes) and
solve engineering problems. Students learn to function on
teams, to communicate effectively, design and conduct
experiments, and to utilize current engineering tools. Students gain an understanding of their professional and
ethical responsibilities as they examine contemporary issues
and the impact of engineering solutions in the global
workplace. Perhaps most importantly, students learn to
learn, so that they can continue to update their industrial
engineering skills throughout their careers

Congratulations to IMSE PhD Student, Rumman Ansary, for winning 1st Place in the Texas Tech University's Graduate School Three Minute Thesis Competition.

His thesis was based on "Drilling Silicon More Efficiently."

During the competition, Ansary began his three-minute presentation with a brief history lesson.

“If you look at the different ages of civilization, you will see in each age, we actually use some materials more than others,” he said. “For example, the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and then the Steel Age. Right now, though we don’t necessarily call it this, we are basically going through the Silicon Age.”

🔎📙Story Time with IMSE!

In honor of National IE Day on September 15, we will be sharing stories from our faculty and alumni and the impact IE has had on their life.

We're starting off this beautiful Friday with sharing the story of Dr. Nade Liang. He joined IMSE last Fall and we're so happy to have him part of our team.

He shares, "When I was a kid, I wanted nothing more than to be a pilot. My grandfather was a pilot, and almost everyone in my family worked for the airlines. For me, becoming an aircraft mechanic was about the closest thing to engineering I could imagine.

But even as a child, people used to call me “picky.” I would look at everyday things, and especially when I made a mistake when using them, wonder, Why did they design it this way? Why is it so hard to use? Couldn’t it be better? That curiosity, and sometimes annoyance, stayed with me.

When I went to college, I stumbled across Human Factors. Suddenly, it all clicked. I learned that in aviation—especially in cockpit design—so many tragedies weren’t the result of technology breaking down, but of designs that ignored human needs and limitations. That discovery was powerful. For the first time, I found a community of people in Industrial Engineering who, like me, weren’t blaming users for mistakes, but were asking: How can we design systems that work better for people?

That perspective changed everything for me. I realized how exciting it could be to study the human body and mind, to use new technologies not just for efficiency, but for safety, for better living. That drive pulled me deeper into Human Factors, and eventually into pursuing advanced degrees in Industrial Engineering.

And now, here I am—an assistant professor at Tech. I get to keep learning, keep discovering, and—what excites me most—help the next generation of engineers see the “human” side of engineering.

When I look back, I think my younger self would be proud. Not just because I’ve found a career I love, but because it’s a path that has the power to make life better for so many more people."

Alumni Spotlight - BS Summer 2025

In honor of National IE Day on September 15, we will be sharing stories from our faculty and alumni and the impact IE has had on their life.

Today's story highlights a success story for IMSE Alumni, Emilio Rios Serna. He graduated with his BS in Summer 2025. He is now a field engineer at Kiewit!

Emilio shares, "IE is the perfect balance of technical knowledge in mathematics, statistics, and optimization with soft knowledge in people, safety, and ergonomics to come up with a better solution to make this world a better place to live in. Industrial Engineering is a broad degree that helped me intern in a chemical process plant, and then land a full time job in the offshore industry. It has given me an open mind to be able to adapt and solve all kinds of problems!"

We can't wait to see everything you accomplish in your future, Emilio!

🔎📙Story Time with IMSE! ft IAB Member!

In honor of National IE Day on September 15, we will be sharing stories from our faculty and alumni and the impact IE has had on their life.

This story comes from one of our IAB Members! Chris Commander has served on the Industrial Advisory Board for several years now and was excited to share his story of how IE has impacted his life.

He shares, "I grew up wanting to be a veterinarian, but my senior year of high school, it occurred to me that since I am allergic to most animals, that was not the best option for me. I come from a family of engineers and I have always been mechanically inclined. I decided on industrial engineering as I loved the ergonomic design aspects of the department. Halfway through college, I realized that I did not want to be in a cube or office all day and the ability to be in the field just stuck in my mind. The flexibility of IE allowed me to stick with it but tailor my needs and wants around what IE offers. I went the more project management route and finished within the department.

Since that time, I have constantly refined my work and the scope of it to match what I excel at and what fills my "buckets" in life. I work in the midstream oil and gas industry, and had the opportunity to start my own business in 2019. Using the principles of IE (especially project management, systems, even economics for engineers) I have built a strong foundation for this company and the team involved. I have been able to turn those original dreams into a reality, and while I don't get to work with the animals, I do get to be in the field and build."

Thank you, Chris Commander, for sharing your story with us. We're happy to have you part of our team and our IAB!

🔎📙Story Time with IMSE!

In honor of National IE Day on September 15, we will be sharing stories from our faculty and alumni and the impact IE has had on their life.

Our next story comes to us from IMSE Department Chair & Professor, Dr. Burak Eksioglu.

He shares, Growing up, I always told everyone I’d be a doctor—that was the plan, mostly because my grandparents were rooting for it. But once high school rolled around, something changed: I started having way more fun solving math problems or tackling tricky physics questions than anything involving biology. That got me wondering whether “doctor” was really my destiny after all.

So I did what any curious teenager would do—I asked around. I chatted with friends who’d finished high school a few years ahead of me and discovered this thing called “engineering.” To sweeten the deal, I learned that becoming an engineer would take less time than becoming a doctor. That might have been the clincher for me!

Now, picking “engineering” was one thing, but figuring out what kind? No idea. It wasn’t until my senior year that someone compared industrial engineering to solving puzzles—and that was all I needed to hear. I’ve always loved puzzles (still do), so I dove in head-first and never looked back.

Not only did the puzzles keep coming, but I loved every minute of it. So I just kept going, pursuing one degree after another in industrial engineering. And here’s the best part: along the way, I met my spouse. Becoming an industrial engineer was the best decision I ever made, and not just because of the degree!

Now when I look back, I think my grandparents would be just as proud knowing I found my way to a career (and a family!) that fits me perfectly."

This is a beautiful story on how IE is changing our lives - daily! Thank you Dr. Burak for sharing your story with us.

🔎📙Story Time with IMSE!

In honor of National IE Day on September 15, we will be sharing stories from our faculty and alumni and the impact IE has had on their life.

First up, Dr. Kaveh Sheikhrezaei!

Dr. Sheikhrezaei is a lecturer and UG Program Chair.

He shares, "I didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming an Industrial Engineer. I actually stumbled into it by curiosity (and maybe a little luck). What hooked me was the idea that IE is basically the "engineering of people and processes." You get to fix problems, save time, and make life easier for everyone, which feels like having a superpower without the cape.

What I love most is how flexible IE is. You can be in healthcare today, space exploration tomorrow, and even when helping my kids practice soccer, turning drills into 'process improvement experiments' (they just call it playtime!). For me, IE isn’t just a career. It’s a way of thinking that makes the world more efficient, one step at a time."

Thank you for sharing you story! We appreciate you and everything you do for IMSE and WCOE!
