Congratulations to Dr. Allison Whitney, who just published a co-edited special issue of Feminist Media Histories on “Women of IMAX.”

Featuring essays by Monika Kin Gagnon on the Japanese editors of the first IMAX film, Janine Marchessault on producer and Indigenous filmmaker Phyllis Wilson Ferguson, Jessica Mulvogue on the work of women museum cinema directors in IMAX history, interviews with filmmaker Toni Myers and astronaut Roberta Bondar, and a zine edited by Tanya Goldman.

The issue also includes essays by winners of the SCMS Gender and Feminisms Caucus Award, Beth Pyner and Leticia Berrizbeitia Añez, and an updated essay by Jasmyn Castro.

The issue was co-edited by Dr. Whitney and Jessica Mulvogue and includes their introduction to the special issue. The issue is available at https://online.ucpress.edu/fmh/issue/12/4 and can be accessed through the TTU Libraries.

Dr. Kristi Osorio, Assistant Professor of Practice in English, will be reading in the Formby Room on Thursday at 5:30pm as part of the Sowell Collection's Fall Reading Series.

Please join us there to celebrate the release of Dr. Osorio's memoir, The Sound of Burning: A Mother, a Daughter, a Murder. There will be a reading, a Q&A, and a reception to follow.

Harbinger Journal of Art & Literature is currently seeking submissions for its 2026-2027 issue in all genres: original fiction and creative nonfiction up to 4,500 words, up to 5 pages of poetry, art/photography (300 dpi per image), and drama up to 15 pages.

This submission window is open through December 2nd, 2026. Submissions are open to any undergraduate student at TTU.

The TTU Book History Club is hosting our first event on October 23rd, and we'd love if you could join us!

If you are interested in the creation of books, book history, or just general book nerdiness, then please come to "Munchies and Manuscripts" at 12 PM on Friday, October 23, in the Humanities Building (HUMA) Atrium.

We'll spend some getting to know each other and enjoying some snacks before heading to Special Collections where Emily Grover will give us a tour of book history with some of the amazing artifacts in TTU's collection. See you then!

Thank you to everyone who joined us Wednesday for the English Department Spotlight Series!

We enjoyed hearing from Dr. Sara Spurgeon, who shared her personal essay “Start with Overripe Bananas,” (check out link in comment) and Dr. Priyanka Ganguly, who presented her research on girl-led communication and menstrual advocacy across borders.

A special thanks to both speakers and the Committee for Community Success for putting this event together!

This week, we welcome nonfiction writer, mitigation specialist, and founder of Advancing Real Change Elizabeth Vartkessian to Texas Tech! She'll teach a class for OLLI this afternoon, visit our MFA practicum tomorrow, and give a reading tomorrow evening from her debut book, The Deserving, at 5 p.m. in the Escondido Theater.

Come and hear Vartkessian's beautiful words about the lives of the condemned and America's justice system.
